Oct. 21st, 2004 07:01 pmAm suddenly finished with book. Overall? Very good - it's the first of The Obsidian Trilogy and I actually want to read the next one, which I presume to be a good sign.
However. The Elves and Demons are L-a-m-e. Why?
Demons = snake eys, barbed tails, horns, fangs, etc. Which is fine. But - live from the suffering of others; greatest pleasure is in torturing other races; are beautiful and good at magic (better than all the other races), and so on and so forth. By the fucking book, these demons. Though the mother/son incest was mildly interesting, but to most slash and even fanfic fans, incest is as nothing. *edit* How could I forget? They live deep in the earth Away From All Light.
Elves = long, long lived. they're all beautiful, wise, indirect, do/make/say EVERYTHING perfectly. Live in the woods, blah blah blah. A regular city of movie-verse Legolas' Though I did like the one dude - Jermayan, despite myself. He's very cool, especially for an elf. And even though he had it, he didn't use the bow and arrow once in the whole damn book. He let some chick use them at some point.
Speaking of chicks - I do give the book serious props for making women that are likable. Seriously - Idalia was cool, the elf queen chick was cool, and this other chick I can' talk about is cool. The only stupid one was the demon queen.
Kellen - the MC - love the boy to death. Mostly your standard issue Bumbling Hero but with enough variety you love him to death. And he's bound to a unicorn for a bit *snickersnort* Shalkan - the unicorn - is a trip.
I like the magic, like the story even if it is basic, unseasoned Save The World fare.
Oh! Favorite bit, all of three sentences. Apparently there are dragons in this world, and they're immortal. But if they mate (there word, not mine) with a human, then they give up their immortality to stay bonded to that human. It's really cool - I can't wait to see dragons show up in the other books (and if they don't? Oh wil there be hell to pay >_>)
Now tosketch out a story where humans are teh k00l and not teh sux0r actually go do some work. Fawk, it's only seven. I still have an entire hour to kill -_-;;
