Because I know I've got a few international friends here (and Canadians).

Restraining orders. Are these strictly an American thing? Are there variations on the theme? Not quite sure what to ask. I need it for all of one snippet of conversation (Sammie, I'll bet you can guess who might be the subject of this conversation before you even see it - but don't tell!).

So, yes. Inform me! Please.

Canada here!

We have restraining orders here! Don't know about everywhere else, but it's one of those things I've sort of put under the category of "it just makes sense".

most countries with a good law system have restraining orders or the like.

some of them require a hefty fine, though.

Aww! Thanks, Spanky! :) I appreciate it.

Yeah, there's something similar here in Oz...can't remember the legal term for it but it's the old "don't get within X number of feet of the person, don't talk to or communicate" - just like a restraining order.

I don't think there's an equivalent here? Because stalking isn't that big a thing here... (Or at least isn't very publicised.) I could ask, if you want...

Oz as well here. Apparently they're called AVOs. My brother's girlfriend got one put on her by one of the girls at her school - basically meant that they weren't allowed near each other. The girl who filed it kept breaching it though, and so she got in a whole lot of trouble.

I figured that would be the case for most european etc. countries. Mostly it was Asia and the ME I wasn't sure about, since their law systems are a bit different.

actually, in the non-china asian countries (i don't know about north korea, either) there are restraining orders. they just aren't used too often, as it does not seem to come up.

I am almost sure that England has restraining orders... Though I couldn't say for sure due to the heavy USA Mass Media influence upon my mind. Lol.
