Have been trying to write Maile's drabbles all night, and they are teh sux0r. Blah.
Those aren't working, but Skylark looks like you might be buying that frog paper.
Because I don't want to spam, more babble:
There are times I want to (all good naturedly) make fun of the pennames by which people go. Then I remember I go by an alcoholic beverage, which gives me no room to talk XD

Date: 2006-01-24 04:35 am (UTC)I am not saying that some online handles aren't funny. Heck, three combined years of World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI gave me my share of run-ins with plenty of Legolassss and Xsepiriothx. I just don't think it would be as funny as it sounds.
Concepting a name for some people is an extremeley personal endevor. Hell, I've been in the room when people are making bullshit accounts for AIM or WoW or some other online addiction, and just staring over their shoulder adds a degree of self awareness to their name selection and sometimes makes them down right unable to choose anything other than the most absurd.
I think handles are best left alone and treated just like any other name. Sure, it's funny the first time you say over your mic, on a Ventrillo server, "hey Lovehurts, share that quest," or "Geedwag, where'd that dagger drop?" But after a while, the words become a name, and not their previous meaning. And if you really start talking about the name, then it can on a more subconscious level become a personal attack at that persons sense of creativity and self presentation.
Meh, that's just my opinion. And this is coming from a guy who's preferred online handle is GRPGM(an acronym that is no longer an acronym). So . . . ya know, not attacking or making judgments on you. Just kinda caught my eye as a topic worth giving an opinion on.
All comments meant with enthusiasm and due respect.

Date: 2006-01-24 10:10 am (UTC)I really said it just to make fun of myself when I caught myself being that obnoxious. There was a name that made me roll my eyes, and then I realized how unreasonable I was being, and then made fun of myself for it.

Re: GRPGM
Date: 2006-01-24 01:45 pm (UTC)I think most of the time, though, we're looking at the attitude more than the name really. It's not really that the name is any more or less ridiculous than our own, but we don't really have anything more tangible to latch onto if we're really annoyed with or really pissed off at the person.
If it's a serious player, with a serious attitude who knows what the fuck he's doing and then does it, yeah, I think "Lovehurts" or "Geedwag" stop sounding strange and just become right in your head. I mean, you can even get over (or maybe stop noticing?) the random permutations of Legolas.
But if the person's a real dick or just a flighty dumbass, the only thing you really have to focus your attention is the name, and in that regards, I think the meaning of the name can change for you. I know even just in watching Mom, I have an easier time making sense of (or I guess validating in my mind?) the names of those people M's friended or honestly likes, than those she hates.
As example when those guys from Hellzdemons KSed them at Vtra (sp?), the only thing anyone could even bother to point out or say about the linkshell was "Yeah, from Hellzdemons--with the gay 'z'!" And other such phrases. It's just what you go to first.
In the case of writing an pennames, you're more inclined roll your eyes at a name if the person is particularly pretentious ('I don't make mistakes in my writing; here all the ones everyone else makse'), and probably do the same with the more annoying ones ("Dylan loves Sue, but Sue love Jim, and Jim loves Amy--but Amy's a vampire! Will any of them ever be able to be with the one they love?!"--maybe not the best example, but you've been on ffnet and FP, you know the people to whom I refer).
Are their names any more or less sensical than mine. Nope. But I'm inclined to scoff at them anyway.

Date: 2006-01-24 01:53 pm (UTC)I really was just more amused at myself for thinking so pretentiously. Pennames are pennames, in the end they don't hurt anyone. I only wanted to laugh at the one because it seemed glaringly like the handle of a fourteen year old with a bad case of emo. But as I said, my handle is amaretto sour. No room to talk.

a paininteresting. Jason always picks anime or manga characters to name his characters after. I think he's been playing WoW as Arima from His and Her Circumstances. >_>;;
