Based on "Three Wolves Mountain" by Bohra Naono, mangaka extraordinaire.

How does one forget one has 1300 words to write until just the day before? Of course I've NEVER done that. EVER. Good luck. What's the topic? And why are you reading this when you should be writing the paper?

Hmm, never heard of it. Looks cool though.

Heh, because I had an awesome and fun-filled weekend of crazy nerd bonding. I didn't want to come in for a landing yet. It's on the "disenchantment" of the modern world according to Marcel Gauchet. We're discussing Gauchet's views on the necessity of religion in order for secularism to actually occur. In other words, secularism would not have been possible without Christianity (and admittedly, the other abrahamic religions). we have to discuss how our fundamental way of "being in the world" is secular. Meaning, when you get a snakebite, you run to the emergency room. You don't pray for three hours first. You might pray after you get the antivenin. HA. It makes for an interesting read, actually. Gauchet was an atheist so I don't agree with his summary of religion as merely a manifestation of our "quest for meaning" in the world rather than belief inspired by some sort of extant divine presence, but he stresses how we need to take a deep look at the history of religion itself in order to understand political and social hap-en-ings. It's a pretty laborious read, actually, but sort of worth it if only because we are diving into Manent's City of Man. Manent takes the opposite view of Gauchet in terms of religion: he thinks secularization is a bad bad thing, and the diminishing of religion as even worse, while Gauchet says, "Eh, 's not a big deal." Manent's book is dedicated to a man named Allan Bloom, who in turn was a student of Leo Strauss. And Strauss, lo and behold, has a whole gaggle of young proteges who call themselves Straussians and think Western society pretty much reached its peak with Plato and the last 2000 years have been a slow spiral downward. This is, of course, Plato we are talking about here. Philosopher kings, the soul in the cave, men of metal, the whole schpiel. Neo-platonists make me itchy. Amongst this talented group are Mssrs. Wolfowitz, Cristol, and Mansfield. ACK.

Whoa. I actually remembered that off the top of my head. I think I just wrote part of my paper! Meg, you are a genius and I shower you with scantily clad goblin men!

PS - You wouldn't happen to know anything about disenchantment of the modern world, would you? We welcome outside sources!

PPS - I am procrastinating.

And I'm duly impressed you knew that off the top of your head.

Also, no. My specialty lies with Buddhism, Zen & Taoism. Free yoursel fo attachment to reach immortality and achieve harmony with the universe. Your disenchantment makes my head hurt.

Hee hee. It was actually your post that reminded me I needed to go find where on the comm someone had pimped they'd made one. I wish I could find one that featured all her works, but this works for me!

Hahaha. That last line is the best quote ever.

Just finished the paper, in fact. I am off to shower and and drive to school to print the dadgum thing out before class. YUSS. It is a sporting 1335 words long and not have incoherent, if I do say so myself.

Interesting specialty. Is that what you studied at Uni? We actually discussed Buddhism in terms of religions that developed during the axial age, along with Judaism and Hinduism, and how they began to separate the divine from the mundane. According to Gauchet, that was the necessary step before secularism to occur. "God's in his Heaven--all's right with the world," eh? I always love seeing religious people misquote that. Never mind that it was Browning's response to the disenchantment of the 19th century. No, it's pretty and it must be happy and about God. EYEROLL.

Okay, time for caffeeeeeeeine. XD
