Work was rather uneventful, though I got home rather late (almost one) because Becca and I were doing the inventory for the HM so she could order everything. That really only took forever b/c the damned fax machine was all "how about not?"

I'm well aware this isn't very good, I'm just utterly stuck as to how to make it good.
She smelled sweet, but the scent was shifting. Sometimes she smelled liked roses, other times she smelled like strawberries, or even honey. Always it was sweet, and her arms were warm and soft as she wrapped them around his shoulders from behind, whispering words of comfort in his ear.
He remained unmoved, one of only two men who could. She may as well have not been there, for all the good she did. She allowed her head to drop to his shoulder, tightening her embrace to try and ease the hurt she knew he felt. When he only tensed further, she sighed and released her hold. Stepping back, she grabbed his shoulder and forced the man to face her. Their frowns were identical.
“Anteros, this moping of yours is a waste of time. Languishing away in misery accomplishes nothing—Eros’ behavior is proof of that.” Aphrodite’s frown deepened as she reached out to stroke her younger son’s curly, strawberry blonde hair. “Eros is difficult, I know this. He hasn’t been the same since his falling out with Psyche.”
“He hasn’t been the same since he met Psyche.” Anteros’ voice was bitter. “Like every one of our Brethren, he found a pretty human and fancied himself in love, assuming that it would be both mutual and eternal. It would have been better if she had simply remained human. Eros’ would have grieved over her death but eventually he would have recovered and then returned to us. Instead, she’s now a god and they fell out of love.”
Aphrodite looked pained, “There is nothing wrong with loving a human Anteros; we have discussed this before.”
“Unless you already have someone to spend eternity with. Not that he ever noticed.” Frustration filled his voice, and Aphrodite sighed again.
“Well, there is some truth to what the humans say about love, dearest.” Aphrodite again embraced her son, smiling in relief when he returned it. “Now darling, all of this we’ve discussed thousands of times. What happened with your foolish brother to bring it up again? You went to visit him yesterday, no? Did you pick another fight over his living amongst the humans?
Anteros pulled away, running a hand through his hair as he recounted the argument to his mother, “Not exactly. It started out that way but then he mentioned her.”
“Her? Who’s this “her?” Aphrodite narrowed her eyes up at her son, tensing.
“She’s his “redemption,” whatever that’s supposed to mean. She’s at least as beautiful as Psyche, in looks, manner…all of it. If I hadn’t just seen Psyche this morning, with fair hair, I would swear this woman was she. And he’s determined to “love her legitimately” this time, again I have no idea what he’s talking about, other than the fact that he is contemplating surrendering his godhood.”
“By Zeus, no!" Aphrodite shrieked in surprise and anger, causing the temple around them to shake slightly, "What is that fool thinking?”
“Well, he’s right that his godhood was the problem with his last relationship, but he’s right in the wrong way. As usual,” for a moment Anteros seemed about to laugh, but his depression refused to lift.
“Yes, turning human is certainly the stupid way to go about things. I had thought that I had raised him better than that, but it would appear I was mistaken. I have idiots for sons.”
“Idiots? Why I am I suddenly a part of this?” Anteros was offended.
Aphrodite’s eyes sparked as her infamous temper flared, “Is it not the truth? My eldest son is contemplating turning human simply because one love affair went sour; he’s being childish and foolish. In the meantime, my youngest son mopes and whines and picks fights rather than simply declaring his feelings. The two of you drive me crazy, and I am tired of picking up the slack while the two of you act like children. Eros has duties and it is high time he resumed them. I was indulgent, patient, and comforting because I thought some time away would clear his head. I can see I was wrong. It is only hurting the both of you. Get of here Anteros, and do not bother returning unless the both of you return—together.
“But…mother…”
“I. Said. Go.” Aphrodite’s eyes flashed, and Anteros knew when to cease his protestations.
Stepping closer, Anteros leaned in to place an affectionate peck on his mother’s soft cheek, “As you command, most beautiful lady.”
Aphrodite waited until her son departed before allowing a smile to return to her face, “Honestly, who would have ever thought my children would be so romantically incompetent?"
Alma smiled across the table at her new boyfriend inwardly preening with pride at the spectacular catch she had managed. And here all her relatives thought her silly, to wait on the perfect man. Well, fools them because there he sat smiling right back at her…except he wasn’t returning her smile. He’d wandered off into space again. “Eric, you seem distracted today. Is something wrong?”
“Hmm? Oh, no. Nothing is wrong, Alma. I’m sorry.”
“…If you say so.” Alma toyed with the ends of her long black hair. She cast Eric another frown as she noticed him again wandering off into thought, “Eric! If there’s something on your mind, I wish you would tell me. We could have just gone to lunch tomorrow if you’d rather be elsewhere.”
“My apologies, I don’t mean to ignore you. I guess I’m still bothered by the argument I had with my brother yesterday.” Eric flashed her a smile, and Alma found it hard to breath. His smiles always did that; the perfect smile in a perfectly handsome face, surrounded by soft, wavy hair of a shade that could only be described as gold. Even his eyes, she couldn't help but think were the perfect shade of blue. She had yet to find anything about him that was lacking. The man of her dreams.
His words registered in her mind, “Brother? I didn’t know you had a brother. You’ve never mentioned it before. Do you want to talk about it?”
Eric shook his head, “No, it’s fine. Really.”
“I’m afraid my brother has never been one for conversation.” A voice spoke up and they both turned to see a man standing near their table. Alma stared up at the stranger, and found it was hard to look away. She had thought Eric was perfect, but looking between the brothers she suddenly realized she couldn’t recall what perfect meant. Eric was tall and well built, though still on the slim side. His skin was fair but not pale, his stormy blue eyes that flashed silver when he was excited.
His brother though…he seemed to be a different kind of perfect. He was the same height as his brother, but that was the only physical similarity. His hair was all loose curls in shades of stunning red-gold; it shimmered in the sun shining down on them. His eyes were the purest green she had ever seen, the exact color of new leaves at the beginning of spring. And where Eric had some muscle to fill his figure out, this one was fleshed out just enough to avoid being bony.
“What do you want?” was all Eric bothered to say.
“Don’t get angry with me, Eric. I’m here on mother’s orders this time.”
Eros’ eyes widened, then narrowed in anger. “You told her, didn’t you?”
“I suggest, brother, that we take this discussion elsewhere.” Anteros glared at his brother, undaunted by the blonde’s rage.
Eros rose fluidly from his seat, moving around the table to bend and peck Alma quickly on the cheek. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I have to go.” Tossing money down on the table, he shot his brother another glare before striding away. Anteros quickly caught up, and the two departed the restaurant with matched steps. Alma watched them go, her eyes darting back and forth with indecision as to which one she should focus on.
Throwing his apartment door open, Eros grabbed his brother by the arm and yanked him inside. He ignored Anteros’ angry cry, tossing his keys and jacket aside before turning to face his unwanted but frequent guest. “How typical of you Anteros, to run off and tell Mother all that I’ve been up to. It’s not enough that you come here every couple of weeks to hassle me, now you’re dragging Aphrodite into it.”
“Forgive my attempts to save you from your own stupidity. And I didn’t run off to tell, you know how mother is.” Anteros frowned, striding over and opening the sliding doors to the balcony. Outside, he breathed deeply. Gods, he hated these stuffy buildings the humans were so fond of. He tensed with awareness as Eros came up behind him.
“Of course, my mistake. Knowing mother, she just babied you until you just came out with it. You’re not much on keeping things to yourself.” He frowned at the back of Anteros’ head, watching him tense up. As he expected, the other man whirled around to face him, anger flaring. Riling the younger god had always been too easy. But his confidence faded as Anteros spoke.
“Oh, and it’s so much better to just bottle everything up? To choke on my misery to the point that I start thinking I want to be a damned mortal?” Anteros threw his arms straight out, shoving Eros back into the house and out of his own space, “Don’t start lecturing me brother—you’re the one Mother has finally had enough with."
Eros tumbled back, colliding with his dining room table. Shoving away from it, he hurled himself back onto the balcony, grabbing the front of Anteros' fitted shirt. and pulling his brother back inside. "Is that why you're in such a snit, Ante? Because she's only mad at me?" Tossing the lighter man down onto the living room couch, he smirked. "Or is it that she's mad at both of us and told you to go away until we started getting along again? Mother is nothing if not predictable."
Anteros looked torn between a snarl and a pout, smoothing out the front of his cream colored shirt and absently wishing for his robes instead of the ridiculous human garb. "So why not do us both a favor and come home? Mother is tired of doing all your work for you, and it's beginning to wear on me. Not to mention that this entire idea of yours is beyond stupid."
The gold haired man glared furiously down at his brother, "What gives you the right to say what I'm doing is stupid? You have no idea what it's like to defy the wishes of the greater gods for one chance at true love. No idea at all what it's like to stand and watch that so called love turn stale."
Face darkening with an all-new level of rage Anteros surged to his feet, catching Eros in the chest and shoving the other man back. Caught by surprise, his brother tumbled to the floor with a hard thud, Anteros landing in an awkward heap on top of him.
Faces just inches apart, they glared in stark anger for several seconds before Anteros bit out a sharp response. "Am I or am I not your opposite in our divine duties? Don't you think that I would know better than anyone how horrible false love can be? Don't you think I’m as familiar with the negatives as you are with the positives? You should know as well as I, Eros, that if you and Psyche fell out of love there was a very good reason for it."
"Yeah, I'm abysmal failure," Eros replied bitterly.
Sitting up, still straddled across his brother, Anteros growled in anger and resisted the urge to hit the other man. "Your abysmally stupid, that's what you are. You're as blind as the humans like to say you are."
Grunting, Eros abruptly moved, sitting up and throwing Anteros off balance. A moment later, their positions were reversed and Eros had his slighter brother pinned to the floor. "You really are in a temper today. What has you this aggressive today? You're not usually dumb enough to actually try attacking me."
"Forgive my stupidity, I guess your own brings it out in me. Or maybe I'm just that desperate to keep you from doing something you'll regret." Anteros had given up struggling, settling for glares until Eros chose to release him.
Eros wasn't moving, blue eyes fierce with anger and unhappiness. "How do you know I'll regret it? It's so easy for you to say, you've never been in my position. I'm tired of it, Ante. I thought I finally had all I wanted in Psyche, only to have it crumble right before my eyes. I'm a god of love and I can't even hack the damnable emotion. I wish I was as lucky as you, and never fallen into it in the first place."
The gold haired man looked like he was about to say more, but the pain that took over his brother's face brought him up short. He paused before he could get a single word out, floundering a moment as his thoughts shifted. "What's wrong with you? I thought you'd punch me, not start crying."
Eyes bright, Anteros began futilely to start struggling against his brother's hold. "Let me go! I'm tired of talking to a brainless, thoughtless, heartless brat like you."
Gaping in stunned amazement, Eros pressed himself closer, adding more of his weight to keep his struggling sibling down. "I'm not going to let you go after hearing something like that. What gives Ante?"
Anteros ignored the question, "Do you really love that stupid human that much?"
"Huh? Of course I--" but Eros faltered before he could finish the sentence.
"No, you don't. You just feel like you should. You're an idiot."
Blue eyes dark with confusion and anger, Eros' stared in furious silence at his brother.
"Let me up."
"No. You're more upset about all this than you should be. Okay, fine - you're right. I don't love her; I was just deluding myself. But I was already starting to realize that. I didn't need you to come down here in another of your snits to tell me that."
"So why continue with the farce? Why not just forget it all and come back home? Just stop being stupid and I'd stop getting in snits." Anteros said exasperatedly.
"Why not stop trying to change the subject and tell me why you're really upset? Something mom said isn't it? You're mad because she told you to do something you don't want to do. You're always impossible when you're ordered around."
"None of your business."
"Fine, be that way. You got what you wanted - I'm not surrendering my godhood. So just leave already." Releasing his grip, Eros shoved up and away from his brother. Rising slowly to his feet he watched silently as Anteros rose to stand in front of him.
Anteros seemed reluctant to go anywhere though, fussing with his clothing and purposefully not looking at his brother. His shoulders hunched slightly, as if he were nervous or worried.
Eros watched his brother, puzzled a moment before something clicked. He began to laugh, "We've really made her mad haven't we? She told you not to come back unless I was with you didn't she? Ha! Mom's so predictable in her temper tantrums."
Managing a weak smile in return Anteros responded, "Something like that. And you're going to be in even more trouble if she catches wind of your making fun of her temper."
The gold haired man shrugged, unconcerned. "So what else is new? I'm always in trouble these days. Either with her or with you. So what's the stipulation - you just have to bring me back? Or did she turn all spiteful and make it worse than that?"
Anteros' smile faltered, "We have to…return together…"
His brother looked surprised, "That's it? The way you've been going on I thought it was a lot worse than that. Just give me until the end of the day to fix everything and we'll go. All right?"
"Sure," Anteros replied faintly.
Eros frowned, "You're not telling the whole story."

Heh, I couldn't resist that. I love Aphrodite, and it was fun to open with her.
I WORSHIP the greek gods, especially in regards to slash. I really want to finish Chimaera but I'm sort of stuck on it.
If children really isn't that bad I'll finish when I get home tonight.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-11 06:39 pm (UTC)She has always been one of my favoites and I think that she's usually portrayed as too soft.. I think she'd have to kick total ass to put up with everything ;)
Then do you know where I can find some?? I've always loved the Greek and Roman verions of the Gods and Goddess. The Norse Gods are pretty awesome too. I've always had a soft spot for Loki ;)
You can only write as much as your muses let you. It will come eventually. It took me more than a year and a half to finish the Tris & Brad's story..
It's really Really REALLY not that bad. *batts eyes* You willllll??

Aphrodite is awesome, she's one of the few female gods I like. And you know she puts up with shit, and own every man (and woman I'm sure) for miles.
Sadly, most of it's all in my head. I've never really been able to find it. It's like this massive fountain of potential but I've never seen anyone tap it.
Thanks. I feel really bad for taking so long with it.
I'll finish it tonight - I've got to if it's going to be ready for V-day. Thanks for the commentary!
(I really should be leaving for work)

Half the time I want to smack him and just tell him to spit it out, and the other half of the time, I can totally understand why he's having a hard time of it. And poor Eros! Being the god of Love and sort of sucking hard core at being in love himself...I loved that. :3 I also loved that Eros thinks he totally understands the situation and the players involved, when it's obvious to us that he's missing a huge piece of the equation.
I know like next to nothing about god mythology, but I'm hooked. More please? Pretty please? *puppy eyes*

That's two for "finish it" but never fear, I was already doing so. Thanks for the commentary, sky. 'tis muchly appreciated.
