Chapter Thirteen
Unregistered Planet (temporary psn 481774), codename "Haven"
"Shh," Raoul murmured as Yevi's eyes snapped open. "Just me."
Yevi reached up and yanked Raoul's hand from his mouth.
Raoul pressed a finger to his own lips, then slowly stood, motioning for Yevi to follow him. He waited impatiently as Yevi dressed, though not so impatiently he didn't appreciate the few glimpses he caught. When Yevi was ready, Raoul turned and led the way out of the dark room and out into the darker night. Slowly he wove his way through the complex, dodging those who had pulled night watch.
When they were finally well away from the camp, he turned to Yevi and grinned. "So if I tell you I found the ship, do I get a kiss?"
Yevi looked at him in surprise. "You found it? Already?" He glared. "I've been trying to find it for ages. How the stars did you find it so quickly?"
"Rock spider," Raoul said with a wink. "I thought like a rock, not like a plant." He motioned to the ground as they entered the forest which surrounded the camp. It had taken him several nights of sneaking around, but he'd done it. "There's a path here; I doubt you can see it."
"It's damn near pitch-black, how can you see anything?" Yevi snapped.
"Again with my rocky half – caves aren't very will lit, you know."
Yevi muttered something Raoul couldn't quite catch, then subsided into silence as they walked.
One thing Raoul had learned – by damn near killing himself – was that they were pretty close to the coast. Damn close and very high up.
He threw his arm out to stop Yevi as they reached the edge of the cliff. Yevi hastily back up a few steps.
"Down we go," he said cheerfully, unable to help it. If his features and magics weren't enough to prove he was half-Fornarian, his love – need – to climb would suffice. Nothing was greater than the height, climbing, scaling, the world vertical rather than horizontal.
Yevi frowned. "What?"
"Down," Raoul repeated. "It's in the cliff."
"I am not climbing down a cliff where I could fall into the ocean and drown, assuming I don't smash against the rocks first." Yevi backed up another step.
Raoul blinked. "You're scared of heights."
"When there is ground available I prefer to keep my feet firmly upon it, and I prefer it to be low ground rather than high. I'm not some lunatic rock spider with a desire to plummet to my death someday."
Raoul flashed a grin. "You're just worried the trip will muss your hair, aren't you?"
Snarling, Yevi stepped in and swung, fist flying for Raoul's head.
Catching it, Raoul dragged Yevi flush against him and focused his magics, sticking to the furious Vrill, then turned and leapt neatly off the cliff. His free hand caught, stuck, to the cliff face and Raoul quickly planted his feet, settling their weight – then covered Yevi's mouth with his own to muffle the startled Vrill's cries.
Cries which rapidly turned to curses, and Raoul swore softly as teeth sank hard into his bottom lip. He licked the blood away as he pulled back. "Unnecessary violence, sweetheart."
"I am going to kill you," Yevi hissed. But the anger in his voice was threaded with genuine fear, and his nails dug painfully into Raoul's shoulders, even through two layers of fabric.
Raoul frowned, feeling guilty and rather wretched. He hadn't realized Yevi was petrified. Tightening his grip around the Vrill's waist, he pressed Yevi firmly against the cliff face. Then he leaned in to brush his lips feather light over Yevi's, deepening it slowly and gently, until Yevi was kissing him back and the nails eased from his shoulders.
"You know how to kiss," Yevi said, sounding more like himself, "but I'm still going to kill you."
"So I should keep you here as long as possible? If I kissed you enough, would I be allowed to live? Fornarians can get pretty creative with vertical surfaces…"
Yevi dug his nails back in, narrowing his eyes.
"Going, going," Raoul said before he could speak. "Hold on tight, babe, it's going to be hard taking us both down and then up."
Nodding, Yevi shifted, wrapping his arms around Raoul's neck and burying his face in his throat. "Why couldn’t I just stay up top?"
Raoul dropped a kiss on his head, then urged Yevi to wrap his legs around his waist. Too bad this was entirely the wrong time to take advantage, and Raoul sighed to think how unlikely he was to sleep well with such distracting memories to harass him later.
Then he focused, dropping whimsical thought to slowly and carefully scale down the cliff. "Almost there, beautiful. Hang tight." Gritting his teeth, Raoul kept moving, finally reaching the tiny ledge that rested just above where the cliff was cut out to make room for a temporary hangar.
Investigating this had been much easier solo…but he wasn’t wholly adverse to having Yevi cling. "Brace yourself," he said softly, then stepped backward off the ledge, catching it just in time and swinging inside the hangar.
"Ground, baby," Raoul murmured, reluctant to stop holding his pretty Vrill. Something about the man just got to him.
Or maybe this weird vacation was more free time than he could stand, and he was predictably going after the lovely, lovely distraction.
Well, he'd figure it out later.
"Stupid rock spider!" Yevi snapped, pulling back and socking him hard in the stomach. Raoul let him, figuring he deserved it.
He grunted in pain. "I didn't know you were afraid as in terrified. I'm sorry."
"Oh, you're going to be sorry," Yevi said. "As soon as we're back up top, you're dead."
Raoul rolled his eyes. "That's encouragement to take you back up how?"
Yevi glared at him, then turned sharply away, taking a look at their surroundings. "So the ship is here?"
"Yes," Raoul said, slipping back into work mode. "I haven't gone further than this because of all the security. They've got a little bit of everything, never mind the ship itself – they must have hacked in and changed all the access codes."
That he had an override for such things – an override gremlins wouldn't be able to tamper with – didn't need to be mentioned yet.
"We don't want to mess with it yet anyway," Yevi said thoughtfully. "You should have given me more warning, I could have brought some of my equipment."
Raoul shrugged. "Figured a light scouting mission was best first. They've got layered encryptions on the door." He pointed to the massive metal doors set about a dozen paces past the edge of the cliff. "Probably requires chem keys; I see that asshole Corin pop pills often enough when he thinks no one is looking."
"Probably, yeah," Yevi said. "I want to know how the hell they stole an Auth combat ship. That shouldn't have been possible. Especially one from a limited run. Cobalts are built for close quarter combat, it should never have been anywhere near…wherever we are. I don't think we're even remotely close to other IG planets, not as long as the runners take."
"No one has reported the cobalt missing – I would remember something like that. Pyotr would know."
Yevi shot him a look. "IA has nothing to do with Auth unless they're investigating Auths."
"And if an Auth-only combat class ship went missing, that would scream insider, which means it would be IA business. If Pyotr knew, then I would know, because he kept me informed of damn near everything on the chance any of those things could be the reason someone tried to kill him. I'd remember him mentioning a stolen or missing ship. Especially a combat class."
"Ugh, I think you look more excited about a combat ship than about kissing me," Yevi said in disgust.
Raoul blinked, then grinned. "Jealous, baby?"
"My name is Yevi. Not beautiful. Not baby. Not sweetheart. Nor any of your other obnoxious epithets."
"Yes, beautiful."
Yevi took a deep breath and turned away, pointedly ignoring him. "Motion sensors?"
"No," Raoul replied. "I tested for them, figuring I could get well away before anyone could come investigate."
"Reckless," Yevi muttered, moving to examine the walls for cameras or sensors.
"And if you were jealous, there's no need. I'd much rather spend quality time with you than with a ship. Even the Melee has nothing on you, gorgeous."
Yevi sighed. "And what is the Melee?"
"A very sexy combat class ship. IA property. Classified combat system. Did I mention it's dead sexy?" Raoul grinned as Yevi whipped around to glare at him. "Not as sexy as you, promise."
"Of all the IA agents to crash land in the middle of my work, why did I have to get the most obnoxious smartass in the stars?" Yevi asked, rubbing his forehead. "I want a vacation."
"You can take one after this is over. I'll come along and keep you company."
Yevi's face suddenly clouded, the Vrill looking deeply troubled. "No, I'm afraid a vacation is entirely out of the question. Always more work to do, I'm afraid. So what shall we do about our combat ship?"
"We need to find out to whom it's assigned," Raoul said. "If it's not listed as stolen or missing, then it's still on active duty – which means this is an even bigger problem than we initially thought."
"Lovely," Yevi said tiredly. "I'd rather suspected….but still…"
Raoul motioned. "We should be getting back."
Yevi blanched and backed away. "No way. You're not making me go back up."
Closing the space between them, Raoul snagged one of Yevi's hands and held it tight, stroking the line of one fine cheekbone with his other. "No choice. They find us here and that'll be all kinds of bad. But no need to worry. I'm a bodyguard, beautiful. I won’t let anything happen to you."
"I don't need a bodyguard," Yevi said tightly, looking away, though not quite enough to pull away from the fingers stroking his cheek. "Can we just get this over with, if I must do it?"
Raoul chuckled softly. "I thought you Vrill were supposed to be patient. Slow and steady, like."
Yevi suddenly smirked. "Hmm, wouldn't you like to know?"
"Oh, now you're just teasing," Raoul said, heat sparking as Yevi turned into his hand. Moving the slightest bit closer, he slid his hand back to sink it into Yevi's hair, so soft, the ribbons woven through it smooth. Tiling Yevi's head just so, he closed the last remaining space between them and kissed him, deep and sure, humming in pleasure when Yevi immediately responded. Arms slid around his neck, and Raoul wrapped his free arm around Yevi's waist, feeling the heat of that slender body, loving how well it fit against his own.
True to form, Yevi kissed slow and steady, with a skill that made Raoul wonder if he'd survive a full night with the man. But oh, what a way to go.
He wished he was Yevi's only motivation for kissing him. With great reluctance he broke away, and rubbed his thumb over those well-kissed lips. "Distracted enough?"
Yevi didn't open his eyes, just held tight. "You have no idea just how distracting you are, Raoul. Let's go.
Wondering what that meant, hoping it was a good thing, Raoul obeyed.
Going up was easier than down had been, though it got a bit tricky getting them both over the edge at the top.
"All right, beautiful," Raoul replied, panting. "You're safe and sound. We'll have to do it again, you know…"
Yevi nodded but did not speak.
Long past ready for bed, Raoul stood up and tugged Yevi to his feet. "Bedtime," he said, not bothering to stifle a yawn. "So I can rise bright and early to harvest more Soul. I think it's called that because it sucks out the souls of the workers, personally."
Chuckling softly, Yevi brushed off his clothes and shook out his hair, then neatly combed his fingers through it to settle it all back in place. "Lead the way, rock spider."
Teasingly, Raoul held out his hand – and startled when Yevi actually took it. Not giving him a chance to change his mind, Raoul tightened his grip on Yevi's hand and started moving. They made their way swiftly back to camp.
"Uh oh," Raoul said softly, stopping abruptly.
Yevi halted beside him, tensing. "What?"
"They're in the barracks," Raoul said. "I guess someone got up to take a piss and noticed me missing…not raising a fuss, so probably hoping not to alert me they know. Smart, especially for this crowd."
"Come with me," Yevi hissed, bolting for the other side of camp, circling the perimeter, dodging the securities with remarkable ease. They bolted into his cabin and Yevi threw the locks. Then he turned and grabbed Raoul by the scruff of his shirt, half-tugging, half-throwing him toward the back half of the cabin, separated by a partition that extended only halfway up.
He shoved again and Raoul landed with an oomph on the bed – before he could blink he had an armful of Vrill, and there was nothing slow and steady about the kiss that took his mouth. Nothing at all.
Figuring out Yevi's plan was easy, and Raoul could find no reason to complain. He would have to find missing star ships more often. It was working well for him.
The knock on the door came when they were both to half-naked and fully hard. Yevi looked torn between annoyance and amusement as he rolled out of bed and stalked to the door, jabbing hard at the keypad. "What?" he snapped.
Corin rolled his eyes. "I guess we know where the Fornarian went, then."
"Half," Raoul said lazily from the bed. "I'm only half."
"Shut the hell up," Corin snapped, then shoved hard at the men standing around him, getting them out of his way, barking for everyone to get back to bed. "And you're doing night shift tomorrow, Fornarian!" he bellowed over his shoulder as Yevi closed the door.
Raoul sat up. "So what now?"
Yevi walked slowly back toward him, flicking his now thoroughly-mussed hair over his shoulders with a reflexive flick. "If I'm going to be putting up with all their stupid comments about fucking you, then I may as well make it worth my while."
There was a note of defeat in his voice that gave Raoul pause, but before he could get truly concerned Yevi slid onto the bed and straddled him, grinding against him. Raoul groaned as those long, elegant fingers moved to the fastenings of his pants. "Rather, you should make it worth my while, hmm rock spider?"
"I should scare you to death more often, if this is what I get," Raoul said on a laugh that rapidly turned into another groan.
Yevi raked his nails down Raoul's chest. "Just for that, I'm going to be very, very slow."

Date: 2007-06-07 01:08 pm (UTC)Also, as much as I adore the pure romance falling in love and eventually into bed stories, I'm super loving that they are doing it semi-out-of-order and with too many secrets still between them.
Also, Raoul wondering if his attraction to Yevi is really something special, or only the best thing in the situation is love. Distraction or not, I hope they really fall in love. ^_^
