I've waited so long to finish Harry Potter, and right now I really just don't care. Everyone keeps talking about it, I've got people threatening to defriend if spoilers are posted w/out cut...and I can only feel the same dread for the book that I do for most of Stephen Kings, in that Rowling has a taste for killing characters, and I know the body count is going to be high....and I would like something fluffy or fun, not depressing.
Ah, well.
My dad is mailng it to me, so I probably wont' read it for awhile, as I told him just to send it whenever.
I really want to read something, but nothing appeals >_o At this point, I'd probably just have to write it first, and that sort of kills the reading to relax, doesn't it? Boo hiss.

Date: 2007-07-19 10:59 pm (UTC)I would normally offer to send books, but I don't have many right now. I do have a copy of "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell." It's alternative history set in England during the Napoleonic wars. Only with magic. The ending isn't great, but the level of detail and the theory of magic in it is awesome.
Willing to mail it to you.

Date: 2007-07-19 11:35 pm (UTC)Sarah has that book actually. And reading your comment, she finally dug it out of the pit that is her bedroom floor ^^;; So I'll see if I can get into it, b/c the premise appeals -- but if the endings sucks....

Date: 2007-07-19 11:37 pm (UTC)God, yes. I never finished book 5 because it was too painful (actually, to be honest, book 3 depressed me, so I may be a little oversensitive.)

Date: 2007-07-19 11:58 pm (UTC)and ummm did you want to decide the dialogue panel by panel or did you want me to do it?
the possible categories are: comedy, horror, fantasy, romance, sci-fi, action, drama, and mystery
i think it's better to have a story that can fit in 2-3 of those categories like romance/fantasy/action. :P

Date: 2007-07-20 12:07 am (UTC)But I will be there at the bookshop for the midnight release. I get the vague feeling that I should maybe be ashamed of that, but I've been reading the books since I was ten, and it's the end of the fandom I've grown up with.
As for other books to read - I'm reading the Wimbledon Poisoner. It's not fantasy, nor is it fluffy, but if you like black comedy it could be a good read. Garth Nix is also a favourite of mine, though his fantasy books are aimed more at teens. "Olivia Joules...", by Helen Fielding is fun AND fluffy (verging on trashy romance)...

Date: 2007-07-20 12:10 am (UTC)I've been racking my brain all day for something that would fit twenty pages ^^;;; I'm sure I'll come up with something.
Never have done anything like this, so I don't know what would be best. I would hazard it'd be best to let you fit the dialogue to the panels.
I'm not sure I could not write romance ^^;; Fantasy is my forte, or so I like to think >_> ; I could try action.
Anything upon which I should focus my thoughts? Dragons? Faeries? Something more dwtd-ish?

Date: 2007-07-20 12:46 am (UTC)It also makes me happy that my mom reads them too so we can discuss the random things that happen (and sometimes reminisce about the weird crap we attract), which I can't do with fluffy gay things.

Date: 2007-07-20 01:15 am (UTC)Actually that remined me of another somewhat similar book that you might like if you liked Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. Have you read the Temeraire series? It's set during the Napoleonic War in England, although the second or third book skips on over to China (same characters), only there are dragons. The style, feel, and detail really remind me of J. Strange and MR N.

Date: 2007-07-20 01:22 am (UTC)Hmm, I have no good book recommendations off the top of my head if you're going for light and fluffy. Deep and intellectual, yes. Tragically depressing, yes. Fluff? no.
As a faithfully adoring reader of yours I feel somewhat sad I cannot think of something you might want to read.

Date: 2007-07-20 01:30 am (UTC)Re: manga
Date: 2007-07-20 01:42 am (UTC)hehe
so fantasy and romance are a go, and as far as action goes, i think it's important to incorporate, but only in the sense that there should be at least one panel with a dramatic slap/punch/motion scene....hehe which i suppose doesn't really make it an action-based story, but i think you know what i mean.
on a side note, i got my hands on a japanese copy of crimson spell last month and went absolutely fangirl crazy!!! it's jam packed full of yaoi goodness (way more so than viewfinder)! it was amazing! XD! .....still haven't completely figured out what's going on though b/c i can't read japanese :'( but the images keep me more than distracted ;)
mmm oh! another thing is, the story should be good, but not so good that their terms of agreement would kill you. i don't think it's as bad as their full manga contract, but basically what it says is that they get first dibs if we want to create a full manga and that they have a right to kill us if we talk to any other publishers about making a full manga before they've gotten a chance to brainwash us into signing a full contract ^_^

Date: 2007-07-20 01:47 am (UTC)*sigh* too true. and i'm fearing that she'll off my other favorite [since sirius is already gone] this go 'round. but i'm still curious as to how she's going to wrap things up.
anywho, i wanted to offer a rec for you- melusine by sarah monette. not so much with the fluffy but i really enjoyed the story. the world and magic is interesting, but sometimes the references to time/dates can be a bit confusing. especially since the two main characters measure it in different ways. but i think it's a pretty interesting read. there's a sequel out now, and a third, but it hasn't been released yet.
just thought i would offer. ^^

Anyway, hope you don't get hit in the face with spoilers. Unless you really and truly don't care anymore, at which point I hope you're ready to duck-and-cover come the evil that is the HP Fangirl.

Date: 2007-07-20 02:10 pm (UTC)And I'm in no hurry to read HP7 either. I'll get to it. Hopefully, though, before I come across a really bad spoiler in some unexpected place (like, for instance, shopping for funny T-shirts online and finding out how and where and by whom a certain wizened old character is going to die before you even have the book *stabs*)

Date: 2007-07-20 06:12 pm (UTC)Temeraire is by Naomi Novak as Broken Moons said. It's three books, but they got republished as an omnibus with all of them in one volume.
I can't actually remember the names of the individual books right now.

God Eaters I've read, but I don't really remember it >_o which means I probably didn't like it either. I think I'm too picky. Will go look into Fair Captain ^___^

Date: 2007-07-21 05:49 am (UTC)I love God Eaters, but everyone has different tastes. Hopefully you'll like My Fair Captain. It's sci-fi regency. And if that isn't bizarre enough, it's one of the only stories I've ever read that has an actual reason for all the male characters being gay. Of course, given that I'm a slash fan I prefer said characters that way, but it's interesting having an explanation.

Date: 2007-07-30 03:29 pm (UTC)Oddly enough, just something with a three(or more)some. I've been in the mood for something like that forever, it's just either my own efforts fail, or I have not the patience/energy to try something else. That prob doesn't make sense, but it seriously is all I want - a poly fic I don't have to write, and not one I've read a dozen times or sucks (as so many of them do, alas). I have two good ideas but haven't felt up to them, so seeing someone else do it would be cool ^^;; Esp. since I love what you did with TWS ^___^
