Kitty posted a drabble about Omicron Theta (ah, Tau Ceti's brother for anyone who might not know). A loooong time she conned me into doing his story. Having finally worked out the one chink that was preventing it, I guess after I catch up other stuff I could take another crack at it. But here's the first page I'd already written, for those of you concerned about his lack of a pretty boy <3 We plotz0r and found him a good one ^_~
And now, alas, I must get ready for work.
Past the Thorns
Research class star ship #93524853, the Sweet Dream
Omicron grumbled and muttered softly to himself as he worked his way through the latest batch of fried wiring. All because his Stupid Brother couldn’t leave well enough alone. Oh, no. It wasn’t enough to be the High Chancellor’s Shining Star with dozens of ships and other fine things to his name, he had to go and try to ruin Omicron’s ship.
Technically it wasn’t his ship; he wasn’t some Grand Genius who could invent such things, but the Grand Chancellor had appointed him to the Sweet Dream and he’d take of her until he fell over dead. Even when his Stupid Brother did his best to destroy it.
Setting aside his K83 pliers, Omicron selected the wires he needed purely by touch and begin the meticulous process of running new wiring. Quietly he began to hum, an old lullaby from his childhood on Zero.
Some time later, the sound of boots on metal broke into his concentration. Omicron scowled at the interruption, but looked up and waited silently for Wilbur to speak.
“Omicron, the High Chancellor has spoken with your brother. He says Tau Ceti will not be doing such things again.”
As if that meant anything. Nodding, Omicron waited. It was clear from his stance and tone that Wilbur had more to say.
“I have also been informed that we’ll be hosting a guest for awhile. A Draconis is being sent to help me record and code all information pertaining to his race. His name is Rezonel.”
Omicron gave another nod. Whatever. So long as the Draconis stayed out of his way and didn’t hurt his ship, why should he care if the man was aboard?
Wilbur smiled faintly, and Omicron would have been annoyed with anyone else for doing that – but Wilbur seldom smiled, and did so only among those he trusted, considered friends. Omicron knew that much, and it…wasn’t too terribly aggravating to be counted a friend. Usually. “How are the final repairs coming?”
His tail lashed irritably, though never in a way it would knock his tools or the wiring still being laid. “I’ll be finished with the wire replacement on level four in three more hours, barring interruptions. After that I’ve got to run all the tests, which will take 25.6 hours, and then switch all systems back to primary power units. Then I will have to run maintenance on the back up systems once everything is properly online again.” He growled low. His brother had gone too far. If he ever was unfortunate enough to see Tau Ceti again, he was going to break every bone in his body.
Seeing that Wilbur had nothing left to say, Omicron turned back to the wiring job. He barely noticed when Wilbur departed, completely lost to the world of metal and circuitry and electricity. Things that made sense. Were reliable. His soft humming mingled pleasantly with the buzzing of the machinery as he worked.
