Daniel slipped into the library, casually glancing around the room. It didn’t take more than a look to find Vincent, settled in one of the fireside armchairs with a book perched in his lap.
Vincent was dressed neatly, immaculate as ever, and Daniel smiled faintly as he crossed the room. Vincent didn’t look up as he approached, lost in the pages before him. Daniel was aware of the looks they got – he knew how quickly gossip traveled the palace, and also that despite having been left alone at Taliesin’s celebration, that he and Vincent were on speaking terms again hadn’t gone unnoticed.
Lucas’s early morning visit had only confirmed that (because Daniel wasn’t stupid – Lucas was never up and about before noon).
Sitting down in the chair next to Vincent, Daniel leaned over to study the book, laughing softly when he recognized it. Vincent looked up distractedly, smiling faintly.
“Haven’t you read that one before?” Daniel asked, shifting in his seat so that he was as close to Vincent as he could be without climbing into his chair.
“I like it,” Vincent defended mildly, closing the book. “There is a reason Calizar was labeled a poetry master.”
“By some,” Daniel teased, surprised again at how easy it was to fall into their old habits. “I would be more inclined to call his attempts at poetry catastrophic.”
Vincent lifted his chin haughtily, his fingers curling around the edges of the book. “Obviously you lack the ability to appreciate fine work when you see it.”
Daniel laughed, reaching out and stealing one of Vincent’s hands for himself. Vincent smiled sweetly, his eyes bright with happiness.
“I think I do alright,” Daniel said after a minute, lifting Vincent’s hand and kissing the back of his fingers. Vincent’s cheeks went a bit pink, and Daniel grinned, standing up but not relinquishing his hold on Vincent’s hand.
“Come on, I’ll walk you to dinner,” Daniel offered, even as he wished he could skip again. His mother would frown at him when she next saw him, though, and Lucas would never let him hear the end of it if he missed dinner for the fifth night in a row. As though it was his fault he kept getting distracted by Vincent and losing track of the time.
Vincent followed his lead, setting the book of poems on the table next to his chair. He straightened out his jacket with his free hand despite how immaculate it was, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles before allowing Daniel to lead him from the library.

Date: 2008-03-28 01:41 am (UTC)“Did your meeting go well?” Vincent asked slowly, hesitantly, as they entered the hallway. Daniel shrugged, frowning a little.
“I’m not sure,” Daniel said slowly, frowning. “Cadavish didn’t bend at all, but Lady Jacobson only had two fits of hysterics.”
“Only two?” Vincent asked, looking solemn. “Is she ill?”
Daniel laughed, shaking his head. “She was distracted by fussing over her son. He’s nearly my age and she treats him like he’s still in his teens.”
“Ah, the young Jacobson,” Vincent said thoughtfully, a smile playing at his lips. “He is not as devoted to his mother as he appears to be.”
“Oh?” Daniel asked, a little amused. “And you would know this how?”
“He helped his sister elope,” Vincent replied, his smile widening. “With the man she loved, rather than the man her mother picked out for her.”
“Really.” Daniel laughed, stopping and tugging Vincent back to face him. “And how do you know this?”
Vincent shrugged, looking pleased with himself. Daniel couldn’t help but laugh again, shaking his head ruefully. Likely Vincent had been involved himself – Vin was nothing if not a hopeless romantic, so it wouldn’t have taken much to convince him.
“We’re going to be late, Daniel,” Vincent pointed out, making no move to continue walking towards the dining hall. And this was the problem – even when they were on their way, Daniel was invariably distracted by Vincent’s presence and made them late, at which point they decided that it was better to not show up rather than to show up late.
“We can go to dinner tomorrow night,” Daniel decided, encroaching on Vincent’s personal space. Vincent laughed, but didn’t protest, and he melted into Daniel’s kiss readily enough.
And really, it wasn’t like they needed to show up together to confirm the rumors, and Daniel already got his fair share of teasing from his siblings (even Taliesin, but especially Lucas and Nicholas). So dinners at court could wait. Daniel had more important things to do.
