Finished reading The Alchemist's Apprentice by Dave Duncan a little while ago. I liked it. I'm a sucker for anything Italy, I confess, but ignoring that I enjoyed the book. The MC is hilarious, very smart ass. Plus, he's just a normal guy (who can summon demons, but for all that, total joe). He works for Nostradomus (but not the Nostradomus, a descendant, which is cool). Murder mystery, touches of alchemy and magic. I liked it much much better than that stupid King's Blade book that put me off Duncan for years.

Was looking through my bookshelf today trying to find some books I think I lent out (the Nightrunner series, since the fourth book is coming out in just a few days, and the Abhorsen trilogy. could not find anywhere, so def lent them out, so I just bought them all again. sigh.), came across The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl. He also wrote The Poe Shadow which I either need to steal back or simply buy in paperback, because I love both those books. So a sucker for alternate history, historical fiction type stuff. I wish he'd put out a new book.

Have about fifty bajillion ebooks to wade through, but it'll have to wait.

Currently am reading one of my new acquisitions, Marriage and the Family in the Middle Ages by Frances and and Joseph Geis. There was an interesting comment made in the book: The incest taboo has so far resisted attempts by psychologists, anthropologists, and socioligists to develop a really convincing and generally accepted explanation. (Even if valid, modern rationales based on alleged genetic outcomes would have no application for earlier societies.)

It makes me wonder how far the research has come since this book was first published. It is an interesting question, once you start really examining it. I shall have to add books about it to my wishlist, along with further studies of sexuality in the middle ages. I know not why this obsession, the time period simply fascinates.

Am switching the Middle Ages book with Naked in Death by J.D. Robb. A guilty pleasure, what can I say?

I guess I should get some work done now.
