I'm so sick of the sex slave/perfectly made creature to serve your every need I can't stand it -__-

Mind you, I say this fully aware I have my dwtd dragons. I guess that means I have no room to talk. But, srsly, shit like this just annoys me because it makes no goddamn sense in the end:

I do not think there is a good way to do such a thing. It always comes off as half-assed and way beyond any suspending of disbelief--and I'm good at suspending. I would have to be, some of the crap I write. I hate when people try too hard in general to build a society and all around elaborate sexual things like this. Forced, half-assed, and everything else. I've never bought a single one.



...I obviously just need to go find another way to cheer myself up. The ebook method is just not working tonight.


Still, it's high on the list of things that bug me to fucking death. It just does not work. I just don't see it as a society that would work well for very long. To design such a society that puts so much emphasis on such things, and more or less revolves around them...would take a lot more work than anyone is ever going to give it, since we all know the real point of such stories is all the smut and bdsm crap that can be shoved into them. The most crucial piece would be the reason that a society would develop in such a way. People always skip that--why does a culture behave the way it does? What made the current norm necessary once upon a time? If that question was answered, something fascinating could probably be done. But no one ever does. It's always just a smut fest.

I tend to find the culture and makeup of a society fascinating, though greatly overlooked. There are plenty of reasons to justify a sex trade in a society. However, the books that tend to show no creativity in the worlds they create will continue that lack of imagination through the book in their characters and the sex scenes they focus on. In the long run, it’s not worth reading them. As with any genre, you have your good and you have plenty of your bad. Sadly, there are no prison sentences for writing bad literature, and too many people write smut with the idea that it’s the only thing needed to write a good piece of erotica. *Still stands in the belief that any piece of writing requires plot and structure*

Hopefully something comes along to bring back your hope in that type of idea. I find it very interesting.

Your DwtD dragons don't thrive on sex though. You have it set up so that they bond with their masters (knights?) over trust and love, not spanking and buttplugs. It's my understanding that they aren't set up to be sex slaves, but to protect things be it people or territories or whatever. Or, in some cases, sleep and eat treats.

I can see the sex slave thing as an underground business, there will always be depressing stuff in the bad part of town, but accepted in normal society?

What decides who becomes slaves and who becomes masters? Not to mention training all these slaves would require a lotta money. And you'll get, what, 10-20 years outta one before he/she isn't very attractive any more? If that much? What then, slit the throat and get a new one? Which yet again leads back to who's the slaves and who's the masters, 'cause how do they recruit new ones? A pregnancy would take several months where that particular slave is useless. 'sides, new slaves would have to be slavexslave breed, right? If not, the line between master/slave would be blurred pretty damn quickly. And if it's a race difference thing, sex slaves aren't really plausible, since most of the so-called superior race wouldn't want to touch one in such an intimate way.

And I don't really get why such a story has to be D/s, really, 'cause then how is the new "owner" different from the people who see the slave as an object? I like my pr0n with a dash of romance. People don't love objects. I mean, I love my laptop, but I wouldn't date it. I'm guessing the argument is "oh, but the slave needs this treatment to get sexual pleasure", or whatever? First, relationships where one part is pushing their sexual deviancy on the other don't usually work out too well. Second, if a person's been abused, they usually don't want more abuse, and if they do, I'm thinking it's some sort of psychological coping mechanism, which probably isn't very healthy.

I agree with you about many of the slavefics out there. Not my fav genre. But on the rec of a dear friend who has yet to steer me wrong, I just read "The Slave Breakers" series by maculategiraffe. While not completely devoid of elements mentioned or eluded to above, it at least puts forth the 'how did this happen' piece. In her summary, she refers to the premise as a cross between The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty and Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" (sell the extra babies of the poor Catholics to the rich folk to eat. Everybody wins. Side Note: I'd never heard of that Anne Rice series. She got paid to write that?!) Which translates, in this story, as a country with no beggars, because parents may sell their children on the 15th birthday.

Anyway, not saying you should read, since you have no love for the genre, anyway, but you were wondering if there was something different out there, and this was that. Different enough? Don't know. Oh, the series of three books is complete, btw.

There's a huge difference which is why your dragons are nice to read and the snow-leopard/human thing is not going to be one I'll be reading. Like you said, I'm quite through with that genera. Have you ever read S A Payne's Heroes and Ghosts? Because it sorta twists the slave thing. Guy gets pet accidentally. Guy freaks out. Guy notices something is weird about his pet (pets in this world are creatures created to look like humans but have intelligence about the level of a dog). There is no bdsm, the slave expects (and fears) it, but it doesn't happen. Neither is there spanking. In fact, it's obvious early on that the master is definitely not a seme.

It's an interesting story with quite a bit of intrigue. And the "master" is a nerdy entomologist.

This reminds me of my Ai no Kusabi misgivings. It's not exactly the same premise, but I also found it hard to suspend my disbelief because they don't bloody well explain 'why'. I mean, if the Elite is engineered, why the fuck do they still need to watch dumbed down pretty versions of enslaved human having sex?

Haha, that's exactly why it's taking me a year (so far) tro write last year's Holidaysmut christmas challenge (toys). At first I was 'Mm, sex toy smut' but quickly the sheer unreality started to bug me.

I still kinda want to finish it, because I think I've solved part of the problem, but the rest of the problems I'm just sidestepping because all it was ever meant to be was smut.

I can't really see how to make a real story out of a premise like this, and I can understand that it bugs you when people try. :)

I now sort of understand why you avoid Torq. I downloaded a bunch of ebooks, and god, my brain is about to explode with just the... pointlessness. If the people who criticize your work by saying it doesn't have enough sex only reads stuff like the ones I've come across, now I know why. I don't see why there needs to be so much... sex. Practically one sex scene per chapter, or even more than one. And just... god. Where's the story? The plot? It just seems like it's been forgotten for all the sex. It's not just the case with what you've noted, this society based on sexual things. It's just been in all of the books I've read, barring one, I think. And that one, I did like. While the topic of sex was still a large part of the book, at least the author concentrated on the emotions and psyche of the characters due to the UST and all of that, rather than just "oh hi, I think you're hot so let's fuck".


One of my pet peeves in fiction, actually, is the concept of love at first sight, or people falling in love in such a short amount of time. It's illogical and very rarely is it done well. But if it is, then I'm okay with it, I do enjoy it.



However, one thing I do enjoy about these ebooks, despite the badness and smutfest all around, is the dialogue during sex. It's just... I find it hilarious. Is it just me, or do they rarely ever sound like intelligent human beings (or whatever creature they may be)? A lot of it is set in America, but it just... the way they talk to each other, their endearments and dirty talk or whatever, it just makes it sound like English isn't their first language. Or the language it's meant to be in. It just reads like a bad translation job.

You know, M recced an ebook a few weeks ago or something, so I hunted it down and bought another of the same authors. And while it's good (there is a plot and so on, and the UST is palpable in the first 100 pages or so--also, the characters are not 2D) as soon as sex comes into play, pfffft!

They were having sex at least once per chapter, and while it was hot, when I re-read it it seemed like all those interesting bits that made up the characters were like threads that were left hanging: they get together and that's that, all the problems they had as individuals don't seem to matter anymore. And it pissed me off because it's such a waste of build-up! I want to know what happens to the doctorate, to the meds, to the running... What, suddenly one is just 'living' for the other and has no other purpose than the one they defined together? ARGH.

You remember the 'desk porn' thingie? Well, I hunted down the book and bought that one and another one from the same authors, the latter being fluffier (set in a school with two school teachers.) The first seven/eight chapters were awesome: the authors took a much overdone cliche and revisited very successfully, making the characters quite real. But then there was sex, and... yeah.

Which is why I don't know how much I'll like the book M was actually talking about, and I'm kinda pushing the time I actually start reading it. *ashamed*

I can buy a distopia, a world where order doesn't come from the governments, but from powerful corporations. I find it harder to believe that getting a place with a powerful corporation could be as easy as that summary implies.

I can buy rich people having genetically engineered bodyguards or sex slaves as status symbols. I can't really buy the two roles being combined, or either status symbol being abandoned as easily as the summary suggests.

As for your DwtD dragons, they're living weapons, who are designed to form a strong emotional attachment with, almost a dependence on, their wielders. Perfectly logical, even that they'd want to strengthen that attachment sexually.
