I think it's mostly that it's not LJ, and it seems to be geared specifically towards creative people collecting their works there... *shrugs*

yeah, I think we were discussing it on twitter or something, but today my flist is mentioning it more than usual. I do not get it in the slightest. I love my LJ longtime.

I think it's because they are working on a way that you can get posts from any of the big LJ clones (Insanejournal, journalfen, etc.) to aggregate on your dreamwidth friend's page. At least that's what I understand the big draw to be.

That and it'll supposedly understand fandom..>.> I'd like one just because I have friends with one but I can't even keep up with posting on one journal.

I kind of want one too, just because. But to get one requires a code and I am codeless.

re:Dreamwidth
It's not really fandom oriented. Somehhow it become publicized that way
Somebody had done a better write up
tl;dr: codes overhaul where if you might have a want feature, they would try to implement it and they are they are trying to keep ads out

There are a lot of people on my flist getting accounts. O.o But I think this is pretty awesome.

Yeah, cause I've never ever seen one company proclaim they have what the others guys got in trouble for not having. Call my cynical, but it's just lather rinse repeat. As dreamwidth grows, they'll get less shiney. It's how business operates.

that's true. I'm pretty sure I remember LJ being as earnest and innocent, once. I think it pretty much ended when they started making it easy to create a journal. They probably should've stuck with the invite codes.

I love bold statements like that. We aren't the other guys, we won't be like the other guys (even though you've friggin' cookie-cuttered their source code?); we love all these diverse thing and words like diverse that make people feel "special".

You know what, LJ was like that once. Until they became incorporated. The second you become a business you are wide-open to scrutiny and liability, and yeah, you have to start covering your ass and making changes and showing a tiny bit of discretion.

The big deal to me is that it is new and idealistic and shiny at the moment. I know that all corporations start out like that, but I believe them when they say that there won't ever be ads because they've spent months ripping out the ad support from the LJ code. Also, they're really, really open to new ideas, and help from any area. As a beginning coder, I know that as soon as I have the time to try and commit a patch, there will be people pretty much walking me through every step of the way.

And, coming from that perspective, I wouldn't say they've cookie-cuttered the code--a lot went into updating and revising the code, and a lot is planned for making the service work for people the way they want to use it. Since they are still shiny and idealistic, it's a time where people can make the service what they need it to be. I like that idea. I also like the fact that you can import from LJ and add LJ users to your reading list on dreamwidth--you don't have to lose all contact with people who like LJ the way it is, and that's very attractive. Anyway, long story short is that it's a new blogging service from people who've worked and lived with LJ code for years (since the new and shiny stage). And the fact that it's fandom-friendly (though not fandom-oriented) is a huge plus.

MEG, you were involved in awesomeness today, I hope your ears were burning.

I finally got Midnight and I brought it to work with me so I could read over lunch. One of my coworkers came into the break room.

CW: Hey, what's that you're reading? The cover looks interesting.
ME: *reading, not looking up* Uh, it's a book. My friend wrote it.
CW: Wow! Really? What's it about?
ME: *squints, still not really paying attention* Sort of... gay zombies and the mad dukes who love them.
CW: ...
ME: ...
CW: ... gay zombies?
ME: *babbling* Well, the zombie's not decaying or anything. He's pretty hot, for a zombie. He's more like a metro zombie. Like, he could model for Aberzombie & Fitch.
CW: .... Aberzom--?
ME: *MENTAL FACEPALM* I'm sorry. I have this disease where I say stupid things.
CW: I know. I've worked with you for almost two years.
ME: *feebly* It's a really good book, though. Well-written. An intriguing plot. With, uh, the gay zombie. And magic.
CW: You know, I could... I could maybe be into that.

I told her I'd pass the book along when I was done. Seriously, I don't think I even shock the people I work with anymore. I bet if I brought up wereyorkies, they'd just pat me on the head and tell me to wander the 636's area for pet titles. Or suggest wereparrots or something. ... say, there's an idea. ;)

My cousin's currently a beta tester for dreamwidth, and yeah, very shiny and idealistic. I'm not sure how I feel about it right now, though I might see if I can try it simply because I know people over there. One feature that I did like is the differentiation between people whose journals you read and people who can read your journal - i.e. people like authors and musicians who I friend because I want to see what they blog about but whom I might not want reading my blog would be on the first list, while all the friends I know would be on both.

So yeah, not entirely sure what the big deal is, but am somewhat interested in checking it out.
