I'm watching a History Channel special on pirates, and it makes me sad that so many ocean storie are lather rinse repeat, b/c there is so much more that could be done with such a setting. Instead, we just get either pirate/kidnapped person or sailor/sailor with the obligatory, humdrum, this is wrong for men of the sea angst.
Watching the segment on this one guy...I forget his name already...but he was pressed into service as a pirate. Then, the Captain dies and the pirates elect new guy. He fucking pwns like a mother fucker, to the point that when he basically gets himself killed, his men honor a promise never to let his body be displayed. This guy pillaged and plundered, but still held Sunday service on his ship. He was forced to be a pirate, but was damned fucking awesome at it when made Captain.
It seems to me, with something like that, you have a pretty awesome set up for a pirate version of the 47 Ronin.
There's also epic potential just for a simple story of a man who becomes a pirate for various reasons, and eventually gives it up for other reasons.
Shit, there's all kinds of crazy potential. But for the 47 Ronin, that has the most potential. I wish I had the ability to do it, but it will take someone much better than me at seafaring type stories. But, I mean, come on.. How awesome would that be? Pirates so loyal to their Captain, they would go to those lengths? It's a beautiful premise, and would be a kick ass story, if done properly.
Alright, pirate show over. You peeps are off the hook for now. But goblin and I are drinking the night away, so you can probably expect more spamming.
I give it five minutes before someone reads this and says something along the lines of NINJAS ARE BETTER.
