Finally bothered to look the damn word up, b/c I've never found anyone who could tell me how it was pronounced. Some say it with the "ch" sound, others with a "k" sound.
Chai [чай] simply means tea. It could be that the Russian's got the word from India. I don't pretend to know the full etymological history of the damned language.
I really only know the parts as pertain to Cyrill and Methodeus.
And now that you know that bit, let's discuss the reduncy of labels like chai tea. ahh... it makes me laugh.
Well, you know, honestly, it's sort of like the whole 'pop' versus 'soft drink' thing to me.
I call it by its brand name. When I go to Michigan and someone offers me a pop... I look at them strangely. Every time. But I din't insist it's a 'soft drink' or a 'coke'.
As for chai? Well, Maybe I'm just lucky to have not met the one person who pronounces it 'kai'...
Chai: Delicious drink that tastes even better with milk and whipped cream
Kai: Delicious, dead guy (although he still walk s around and everything) who would probably also taste better with whipped cream. (I'm very sorry for this Lexx reference, and I promise I'll never do it again. Heh. Maybe.)

Date: 2004-11-05 12:54 pm (UTC)So did I, until someone bitched me up one street and down the other, insisting it was 'k'
You're allowed to be right once a month. So I guess you're done for November.

Date: 2004-11-05 03:54 pm (UTC)Then why is it always advertised as an Indian-ish tea?

Date: 2004-11-05 10:21 pm (UTC)I didn't realize people were mispronouncing it. Though I guess that makes sense. I mean, if they can say 'chai tea', why not 'khai tea'?
I suppose both are not so veiled efforts to sound educated. Either way, both should be stopped immediately, and those saying such vileness smacked.
But those're just my thoughts.
Well
