I really really REALLY don't want one. B/c I'm going to f'ing hate the thing. But it's more and more painfully obvious by the day that I *need* one.

But a cell phone is just going to have to wait until at least Feb, b/c I've got too much else to try and pay for before then. My last HUGE payment for the one cc is due at hte end of this month, and b/c of yaoi-con I might only just barely scrap together enough money for it. So my first paycheck in December is all I'll have to A) buy gifts and 4) get home.

So far T-mobile seems the best to me. But if anyone has advice, I'd appreciat it. I have no idea whatsoever how to shop for c-phones.

Blarghity. Mondays need to be stricken from existence.

Miss you too, Sammie.

In theory, M&D are buying my plane ticket. They won't let me help at all so far. So we'll see.

Lately I've heard lots of good things about Verizon. I might check them out after my Cingular contract is up. Don't get Cingular >=P

Before anything, sit down and think to yourself just how much you intend to use this cell phone, and who you're going to use it to call. Seriously. If you think you are not going to use the cell much, I would strongly recommend one of those pay-as-you-go plans like T-mobile.

I used to have a regular plan that costed about $25/month, but I never used all the minutes. Sure they roll over to the next month, but by the end of the year, I'd have WAAAAAY too many minutes. Plus, with me being here in DC and my family in Hawaii, it cost extra anyway, since it was so far away. And I wasn't about to force my family to take MY phone company just so I could talk free.

T-mobile has a simple pay-as-you-go start-up that will give you a simple phone and roughly 100 minutes for about $100 bucks. This includes the phone number for the cell phone and voice mail. It is easy enough to add money to your phone account (7-11 stores carry refill cards) and I get pretty good reception, even indoors, and the minutes are good for a whole year.

If, however, you plan to make the cell phone your primary phone, then definitely go for a plan. I liked AT&T, but my family prefers Verizon.

When shopping for phones themselves, you have to consider how much you want to pay. Of course, there are phones with great color monitors, digital cameras, etc, but they are going to cost up the wazoo.

I stay away from antennas and flip phones myself because I tend to be rough on my cell phones, and I KNOW I would break things like that off. Plus, the flip phones, while cute and small, are SMALL. I can't tell you the number of people I know who put the thing in their pocket and it falls out and they don't even notice. Or put it in their bag and then have to go purse-excavating just to find it when it rings.

But then again, that's MY preference. Find one that fits comfortably into your hand, that you think hits ear and mouth nicely, and that you can press buttons easily on.

I'd almost never use the thing, so really I just want something that can take a beating and doesn't require a freakin' book to learn how to use.

And I am going with pay-as-you-go, b/c I'm leaving for London in less than a year.

Thanks!

REALLY??? Cool! How long are you going to be gone? Are you going to try to find a pay-as-you-go that is good overseas? You know, just in case?

Does this mean that if I go to London next year, I get to bug you? ^_____^

I may be getting presumptuous - I've been accepted to the University of London, but I still need to manage to get finaid and all *is determined not to worry self to death* So far as the phone goes - I'm hoping I can keep my phone and switch to a pay/go thing over there.

Bug! Bug! That would rock!!!

I use Virgin Mobile myself. It's a "pay as you go" type of plan & it uses the Sprint network. You have to buy your phone (I got mine at Media Play on triple point weekend, so ended up getting $20 back. ^^) & you have to put atleast $20 on the phone every 3 months. It costs 25cents a minute for the first 10 minutes each day, then it's 10cents a minute after that. Free long distance, free roaming. Voicemail is free. (though if you call to check your voicemail on your cellphone, you get charged for those minutes)

http://www.virginmobileusa.com/ If you want to check on them. They just came out with a camera phone.

You'd still have to buy a calling plan, but you could reprogram S's phone to whatever number you would get. I know it works from personal experience. (My new phone may be a hand-me-down, but it works!) =) A tad cheaper that way.

AT&T is the best around here but I think it depends where you are.

Tips on getting a cell phone: Immediately after buying it programming Stardance's number into it and calling her <3

I think around here T-mobile seems to be where it's at.

^___^ Duly noted.

Definitely the way to go is to find out who has the best service in the area. I loved AT&T on the East Coast... On the West Coast, the best service around in Verizon. A cell phone is great... as long as you can get reception when you need it. Plus, free evenings and weekends on my plan means I get to call all my friends no matter where they are and chat. (Well.. maybe not internationally...)
