I could bitch about work, b/c the prissy lawyers are annoying me. But eh.
Instead - I got crowded in an elevator with a bunch of the construction workers while I was delivering mail. They were really cute when we hit their floor, and all "Let the little lady off" "It's not her floor" "Oh, okay. Have a nice day there."
I'm every amused to be called "little lady" b/c while I'm not large, I'm certainly not small. I'm rather generously endowed and it's obvious I work in an inactive office job. Plus I've all the manners of a sailor, so 'lady' fits even less than 'little'
It's still cute though.
To change topics completely. Love love the Thursday Next novels. But one would think that in a book about books and reading etc, the writer and freakin' editors would know that any word ending is 's' does not get an 's - just the apostrophe. Unless there's some grand joke or pun that hasn't yet occured. It's seriously annoying me.
Now I suppose I should get back to work. Before the lawyers find something else to bitch about.

Date: 2005-01-08 08:07 am (UTC)So... when a manuscript gets edited for publication, the s would probably be added back on after just a naked apostrophe, even though it would be correct without the s.
:-P random knowledge from On Writing by Mr. Stephen King.
PS - Check it... I know you want it...

Date: 2005-01-09 01:16 am (UTC)I thought at one point you only added an apostrophe to words ending in "s." Then I read somewhere that was actually incorrect and you do add "'s" to words ending in "s." The rules of grammar change far too often for my taste. For example, is it Cass' or Cass's? I've been going for the latter since that's what the last thing on the subject I read said. Normally, I prefer the older rules and fight against change. Of course, I made the editors at work do research when I asked them find out whether or not quotes like I put above should be written "s." or "s". at the end of a sentence because the "s" is not a spoken quote but is quoted for a different purpose. It's either a ! or a ? that gets put outside in that instance. Otherwise, the punctuation always go inside the quotes as normal.
It is definitely a struggle to not only follow the rules but also to find out what they are.
However, King saying you don't need to write correctly because others don't know any better is a mark for me to put against him.
