I think it was [livejournal.com profile] hakuyama who ranted about this a few days ago.

If I credit an icon, it's because I want to. Not because I feel like it's something I have to do. This is the internet, very little is held sacred. And with a bajillion and one lj's and whatnot, icons are going to be squeed over and borrowed and traded and exchanged and lost, etc.

Stop fucking whining because somebody "stole" your icon. If you post them to, oh say, an icon community, PEOPLE ARE GOING TO STEAL THEM. This is called logic, please use it.

On that note, my icons are ALL MINE and no one is allowed to have them. MINE ALL MINE. Except for the ones I already stole. Which is like almost all of them. You can continue the cycle of thievery with those ones.

And now I really am going to clean my room. I swear it.

Well, it depends. Say, if I make an icon using original art, I'm going to be pretty pissed if someone steals it. And some people consider icons something like, eh, fanart, and nobody likes an art thief.

But eh. I don't do icons, so I really don't have an opinion. *g*

I should probably clarify. I mean primarily those who make icons out of clips and official art and stuff. That art isn't their property. If it's your own art or whatnot, that's different. Then again, so long as they're just claiming they made the icon and not the actual pictuer I don't see a huge problem.

This is perhaps why I like to be obnoxious and stamp my name on all of my icons. Not that the art isn't already stolen.. ^^;;

Doesn't matter to me if someone runs off with my icons or not. I have always associated them with me, and besides that -- I have a back story and source for each and everyone of them.

I always thought that the crediting for icons was a little silly, esp. with official art or screencaps or whatnot, but some folks treat them like art: "I spent a lot of time making this and would like credit." The stuff posted to the icon comms is there for folks to take, yeah, but whenever someone says, "Please credit if you take it", then I will, just because they said it as a request, a requirement for the work that yeah, they did put in. I figure it's only fair, for saving me the time to make the icon itself. And...I dunno...I just would never "steal" someone's icon. Like one that I saw when they posted? I've seen some good ones, but I don't take them because, I don't know, I guess I don't feel that I've got a right to them. I didn't make them, don't know if they were gifts for one specific person, or commissioned, or whatever. I figure if I like it so much, I could just make a similar one myself....

Generally if you see a unique icon, the yeah. It's poor taste to steal it. Everyone likes to be as unique as they can be. But the ones I'm bitching about (and note to self: be more specific in rants) post their icons in icon communities. I can see they'd be annoyed that someone else would post them all on her journal - but I think possessiveness should only go so far. I mean if they make the icons to be used by others, why are they getting mad that others would post them so others can see them and use them?

I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, I don't care if someone uses my icons. If I saw it, I'd probably have to comment with something like, "My icon! You use my icon! :D I feel so special!"

But it's nice to get credit for editing the image, coming up with something to say on the image, and then putting the words in and making them look pretty. Sometimes making icons can take quite a while, it's good to get recognition.

So... I guess what I'm saying is that I don't care, but I can see why some people might.
