Stupid livejournal just ate my post. and it was too long for me to want to retype it all. drat.

Suffice to say I wandered back into my academic thoughts today - I was contemplating the dissertation I would like to write someday. I realize most people see an academic interested in studying yaoi and hold up crosses and hiss, but I swear I'm not like that.

The dissertation I would like write eventually would discuss the differences b/t Japenese Yaoi and Western Slash (I'm being redundant for a reason). I had a whole list of reasons and theories, those are what I'm too annoyed to bother typing again. But humour a lonely, aspiring academic and answer me this: Do you consider yourself a yaoi fan, a slash fan, both or neither?

*goes back to writing and sulking*

Yaoi fan.

I guess because my definition of slash vs. yaoi just seems to be based on what fandom we're talking about. Game and anime and manga fandoms are yaoi, while TV shows and movies are slash. And I'm more into the former, so....

thank you!

that's actually one of my defining points, whether you like anime, manga, tv, movies, etc.

I appreciate the response, thank you!

Arrgh! I feel your pain; lj has eaten a few of my posts, too. I consider myself a slash fan, simple because most of what I read is HP, which is western, which is slash. :)

But really, traditionally yaoi is where the guys are gay. There's no consequences to it, there's no difference between straight and gay, it just is. While slash, they 'deal' with it. They're in denial, or they're angry about it, or other people are disgusted by it. Or they catch an STD because of it. Slash is more 'real life.'

At least, that's what I read somewhere. :) But the line has been blurred between them, so now I really don't think there's much of a difference, except that one's western and one's eastern.

If we're going by the strict term of the word "yaoi", meaning only sex, no plot, no love, nada, then I have to say I actually don't like it all that much. Sure, I'll look at it from time to time, but I find it very unfulfilling. So I would say, if it's "yaoi=porn" vs. "slash=erotica", I prefer slash.

If the distinction is "yaoi=Japanese" and "slash=Western", then I really don't care. Boys should be falling in love with boys all over the world. But when Japanese boys do it, it usually prettier. ^_~

Interesting. I think it's most helpful just to see how everyone keeps defining it. No one so far has defined it in exactly the same way. I'll have to file all these away to use someday. Would you mind?

Well to me I've always seen Yaoi as a strictly anime fandom and slash as original characters as well as RPS and Movies and TV and the like. But I tend to refer to yaoi as slash alot. So the line is very blurry.

I seem to choose my favorites not by genre but by paring. I'm more driven by the characters than story I guess.

That's a response I haven't heard - the characters rather than story.

This paper will be more fun than I thought. Should I be happy at the prospect of writing a long ass paper?

There can be a story that pushed every one of my buttons but if it's not a pairing I like I most likely will not read it.

YES! This paper sounds like it will be a TON of fun to do!

To me Yaoi is light and often comedic, and Slash is angsty. (Of course it all depends on the yaoi you usually read; I know there is some really hardcore out there, but I enjoy the playful. And I'd also rather read OC Slash than fandom.)

That's cool! I've never heard that perspective before. Comedic vs. Angsty...*scribbles note*

Arigatou!

OC - I'm slowly getting hooked on that.

Ouch totally feel your pain. It has done that horrible deed to many a great of us.

Hmmm yaoi or slash? In my mind they are pretty much the same thing. Except Yaoi usually has pretty boys from Japanese things such as Anime and Manga's and Slash is usually like books, movies and TV shows.

I'd have to say I enjoy them both. As long as they included Boy/Boy I'm happy!!!

It's never happened to me before, so I was sorely displeased to finally be a victim.

Great answer! Ah, this is so much fun.
