Nov. 29th, 2005 01:15 pmSo apparently the penalty for going on vacation is crule and unusual punishment.
Enough talk of work now.
Want to write. Hopefully will not give in to urge to collapse once I'm home. Still have idea when/if staying late. Apparently the worst of the sucktastic doesn't start 'til January, which is good. Whoops, that slid into work.
Remind me to double check SMP dates. Have one due beginning of December, then Yuletide, then another SMP due at end of Dec. And a couple of other stories, hopefully. And Prisoner to finish, which I have to do first b/c if I do other stuff now I'll never finish it. Ergh. most of tonight, I think, will be spent getting back into that groove.
Apparently it's a newfangled idea in fantasydom to have a bad guy who is not Supreme Evil. They (panelists) all made a big deal about how they didn't have "good vs. bad" just different sides, and their bad guys weren't 100% evil, blah blah blah. The most useful part of that panel was that it is apparenlty okay if you don't want to write a series that's fifty-bajillion pages long. Apparently the preferred word count these days is 150,000 words, give or take. Which is about what Prisoner will be when I'm finally done with it (I must be the only writer who has to go back and *add* stuff rather than subtract. Mabye b/c my tendency is to be as concise as possible).
The vampire panel, which I'd been looking forward to, was a bust. 80% of it was a Let's Bash Anne Rice panel (granted, I don't like the woman, but when you're a professional you don't go around trash talking your peers. Just no. You lose). 10% was what the panel actually should have been - trends in vampires, popularity, what's been done, what hasn't been done (apparenlty it's bad that I'm sticking with the whole romance thing. But I don't think anyone else has done quite what I'm planning to do - but I could be wrong. Certainly the romance of my story is probably done to death, then again I do get blackmailed and threatened alot...). The other 10% was just ego-strokinug or off topic.
I don't like C.S.Friedman. She was snide, snotty, almost never smiled, and even though her books seem to be of substantial page count, she doesn't appear to like reading anything more than 100 pages of action and flash. Perhaps I'm wrong (probably am) but that's the impression she gave. Maybe she's better elsewhere, but I got nothing but a negative impression. Tamora Pierce was mostly cool. I didn't recognize the other guys; must have been straight up sci-fi (though the one guy writes about nazi vampires? Scott McMillan, was that his name? Scott something). But they seemed cool. But dude, if I ever start acting like that should I ever become someone important enough to be asked to do a panel...fucking bitch slap me. A lot.
My kingdom to never see this goddamn office again.
Maile and I watched Samurai Deeper Kyo. It had some good points...but overall I dunno. The ending fucking blew, and that kidn of ruins a series for me. But some of the chars were cool and I had fun watching it with Maile.
I need something to read that won't get me in trouble at work. Hmmm...

Date: 2005-11-29 07:32 pm (UTC)But then, if there's no supreme evil, then there really isn't much of a threat, so why the hell all this questing and fighting and OMG must save the world now. It's silly.
I mean, if Sauron hadn't been the evil supreme, then the entire premise of LotR would have been ... ... What are we doing now? I'd imagine HP would be about the same. If Harry and Voldemort simply didn't get along, then the entensity and necessity of the battle to come would seem over-zealous and melodramatic.
I mean... whatever. I'll shut up now.

IF you're only fighting over a difference of opinion, then what are you fighting for at all? Just go to an auditorium and have a debate and save us about 100 pages of bull.
