Am giving my family my desktop, as they need it more than me and I have a shiny!laptop coming. Price? My paretns are buying me Stephen King's new book ^_^ I consider this a fair exchange.
Um, strange and random question, but how hard are they to set up? My wireless is set up with WPA, and is as secure as freaking Fort Knox. I set it up on my own back in May, I have never had problems with it, and my dad can't set his up worth shit to work longer than 2 days without problems. Do I just have mad networking skillz?
I find that the main issue usually is the hardware. I took me a while to figure out how to get the WEP set-up on mine, but that was because the wireless router is stupid. My parents had to get set-up oddly, because their ASDL modem would work with their router in the way the router wanted it to work, so I had to hook up th modem like a computer, instead of using the WAN port, & now occasionally when the modem resets it's IP info, the computers can't find the internet & have to have their network stuff reset/repaired to re-find things correctly again.
Ah, so I just got lucky. I ended up using a Surfboard cable modem and a linksys Compact wireless G router. No compatibility issues there and my cable internet provider is awesome. Of course, when I go home, I have to gank internet from some neighbor who has an open wireless DSL setup.
What I hated about linksys was, when I called their tech support number once, it turned out their tech support was in South Asia, and while I'm good with Indian/Pakistani accents, I'm better when I can see their lips move. I felt like such a dumbass talking to them.
I think dad's problem was that his cable modem was originally made in like... 95, so it wasn't real fast and had compatibility issues with anything that wasn't made during the Industrial Revolution. ;)
Now, I just have to suck it up and purchase the wireless print server and my apartment will be the coolest.
Um, so I just sent you an email to your msn address. Let me know what you think... it's something I ran past Jo and she seemed to think it was worth mentioning. :)
