What Now: The Lottery Ficathon

An original slash ficathon inspired by the following sentences:

Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman.

So this is a ficathon in two parts. You are welcome to participate in both parts, or simply one or the other (though you are of course encouraged to do both)

The Basics – READ THIS

Ficathon is being run by [livejournal.com profile] maderr and [livejournal.com profile] rykaine. Any questions should be directed to us (amasour @ msn.com, rykaine @ yahoo.com, AIM speak with Winged Rykaine, or drop a comment on our LJ’s).

Sign up will run until March 1st.
Part One will run until April 1st.
Part Two will run until July 1st.

This is an original slash ficathon. For those who don’t know, that means the pairings are all male/male (ordinarily, I’d do female/female as well, but obviously that wouldn’t quite work. Maybe something can be arranged next time).

Characters are not limited to any particular place, time etc. You can design a human in modern day, something fantastical, sci-fi, nonhuman characters, whatever. Just keep in mind that some people might not feel comfortable writing about certain things. By the same token, we want everyone to be creative and have fun. So enjoy, but don’t go overboard.

Don’t sign up if you’re not going to be able to follow through. While we understand things happen, and will certainly bear no ill will if you have to drop out, only sign up if you’re 98% certain you can participate.

There will be no redrawing. Once you get a character, that’s what you have to work with. Unless you have a very good reason for not being able to work with the character assigned, what you get is it.

Do not go creating characters that are impossible for someone to work with, nor do we want to see character outlines that are obviously geared toward a particular scenario. Keep them interesting but versatile.

You do not need to have an LJ to participate. Anyone interested is welcome.

All ratings are accepted.

Website to come, but everyone is free to post their characters and stories as they please once the ficathon is concluded.

If you plan to participate in both parts, you can do so in one comment.

Part the First – Putting Names in the Urn

If you’ve ever Trained a Key for the Palace of Keys, this will be familiar to you. If not, don’t worry, it’s loads of fun.

In order to “pick” names out of the urn, we first need names to put in it. That means we’re creating characters. If you want to participate in this part of the ficathon (and I encourage you to do so if you want to write a story), all that is required is the creation of a character. If you would like to create more than one, by all means, but I think I’ll cap it at three per so I don’t wind up with too many.

Characters need to include:

*Name
*Physical appearance (build, hair, eyes, scars, tattoos, etc. human? Elf? Dragon? You get the idea). Don’t get carried way, we’re looking for a good idea of what this character looks like, but we don’t need a three page play-by-play.
*Personality – again, don’t go on for three pages, but give us a good idea what your character is like. Good with magic? Shy? Hostile? Loner? Explain it all here.
*Life – Rich? Poor? Nomad? Tell how this character has lived, what he does, any important events or moments.
*Anything else you can think of that is pertinent for the recipient to know.
*Keep it concise – informative but brief.
*Don’t write a character that might seriously squick someone out. Remember, you don’t know who will get your character. We want this to be fun for everyone, and it’s no fun if someone is too intimidated or upset by his or her character to write. If you’re not sure, don’t write it.

To Sign Up for Part One:

In the Subject line put Part One. In the comments, give the following information:

*Name you go by
*email I can reach you
*any website, etc. you’d like included when the stories are posted, as the character sketches and who created them will be listed along with the story.

Part One will run from March 1st to April 1st. When you have designed your character, email it to amasour @ msn.com with ‘Ficathon Character’ in the subject line. If you’re designing more than one character, put them in separate emails. Do Not send attachments. Send me your character sketches in the body of the email, and try to keep the formatting simple. Also include your information (name, contact, website etc) so I know who has submitted their characters and who hasn’t.

Part the Second – Drawing Names

While I would like for everyone to be able to ‘draw names’ themselves, my head hurts trying to work that out. So, names will be randomly selected and assigned (but don’t worry, you won’t get your own character unless I really manage to bungle things, in which case you get a redraw). Every participant gets to 'draw' one character. If you’d like to write more than one story, contact me or rykaine (amasour @ msn.com; rykaine @ yahoo.com).

To reiterate – each player gets to choose one name (that is, you’ll be randomly given one character) unless you’ve worked out something with myself or rykaine. Who he’s paired with is entirely up to you. It’s your story, all we’re doing is assigning a random character as opposed to your usual challenge or theme.

Part One ends on April 1st. By April 5th all character assignments will be out.

Remember the basic premise of these stories:

The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman.

Except, obviously (if you haven’t noticed yet), the pairings are all male/male. You are of course welcome to play loose and fast with this premise – for instance, the stories do not have to be based on the lottery. They can be stuck together for a wholly separate reason. If you want to stick to the literal idea of a drawing, you are welcome to do so. The general theme is that, for one reason or another, the characters are paired together for a span of one year.

All rating levels are accepted, though I expect everyone to behave appropriately.

To Sign Up for Part Two:

In the Subject line put Part Two. In the comments, give the following information:

*Name you go by
*email I can reach you
*any website, etc. you’d like included when the stories are posted.

Part Two will run from April 5th to July 1st, giving you just shy of three months to write your stories. We don’t want sprawling epics, but we don’t want really short stories either. Minimum requirement is 1000 words, and there is no maximum limit except that the story must be complete when the ficathon closes (though we will consider an extension of time if we feel one is necessary).

If you cannot write a story for the character you drew, let us know ASAP (amasour @ msn.com; rykaine @ yahoo.com). If you will not be able to complete your story, let us know ASAP.

Send all completed stories to amasour @ msn.com, with ‘Ficathon Story’ in the subject line, along with all your information again (so I can verify who has submitted, etc.) and any pertinent warnings, etc. Stories may be sent as attachments.

That should be everything. Any questions, you should know how to contact us by now ^_^ If there’s an emergency and email won’t suffice, Rykaine can be contacted via AIM at Winged Rykaine.

Thanks for playing, and we hope everyone has fun!

Nope. If you do Part One, all we need is a written description: name, appearace, personality, what all else you decide to add. You don't have to draw or sketch anything.
