At least half my flist is furious about the bill passed in South Dakota banning abortion.

Most are furious because it violates the rights of women. The rest are furious about the violation of rights in general.

As ever, [livejournal.com profile] rykaine states my feelings best. But I also believe on standing on my own feet, so my two silly cents:

Abortion is an issue that's never going to settle. Whichever way you go, people are going to be extremely unhappy. There's way too much gray there by the time all the arguments are said and done. My feelings on it are the same as most everything else - I have no right telling anyone what to do with their child, who they can fuck, who they marry, so on and so forth. If someone tried to order me around thusly, I would be livid. To each his own.

I dislike the feminazis using this to push a war that should have ended long ago. Believe me, I know what it's like to be discriminated against because I have tits. It's happened before, it'll happen again. But for every asshat, there's the guy that treats me like an equal and a guy that treats me like I'm special. In the day to day, in many places and fields, I am treated equal, at last so far as equality is possible. The fights for women's rights isn't what it used to be and far too many feminists won't change with it. I dislike them as much as the men who treat me like I'm a servant. Ultimately, they do more harm than good.

Beyond that, shit's going to get worse before it gets better. Abortion, gay rights, the ongoing war, and there's more besides. Everything is exploding or about to, but any history book will show you that's the way it goes. Not to say one should sit back and let it happen, but nothing lasts forever and if something can go one way, eventually it will go the other.

Not very coherent, my feeble excuse is that work of late has been killing me. Suffice to say what I always say: People have too much fucking free time.

Though I cannot view the link you gave, I think my views are basically the same as yours.

Though I have been thinking that if more people had access to emergency contraception such as the morning after pill, there would far less call for abortions.

As I don't have a womb, this is one of the arguments I try not to argue fiercely about.

In any case, the passing of that bill was merely meant to start a fight, not to be left standing. So I guess if people start fighting about it, the mission was accomplished.

*nods at the feminist agenda bit* I took a 'US in the 1960's' history class and we studied the beginnings of the Pro-choice movement in depth. Reproductive rights were the one thing that women across race and class lines could (mostly) all agree upon, so it was a rallying issue. I think it sucks that drug stores would not even sell women condoms without a note from their husband, but those days have, thankfully, past. While I don't think that the fight for equal rights will ever be one we can claim is over, I no longer think that the issue of reproductive rights is as important to women's equality on the whole anymore.

I'm anti-abortion... but I don't think that we'll see a solution to the issue as long as both sides are fighting each other so desperately.

Interesting trivia: Over the past 2 decades, there were fewer abortions during Clinton's(pro-choice) admin than during those of the Republican, Pro-Life presidents. (my priest told us that while discouraging single-issue voting, I have no other back up source)

Er... in other words... I think I'm agreeing with you.^^ lol, I suppose I could have just said that...
