I hate being sick
Jan. 26th, 2004 02:27 pmI'm really starting to think something is wrong with that damned store. I almost never get sick, yet twice now I've been seriously ill. I'm going to burn it, I swear.
I'll be hiding in my bed most of the day, seeing as the ice has shut everything down and there's no going anywhere to get anything.

jagen13, just b/c I love this sort of thing:
If you've ever watched your favorite DVDs, and then found yourself eager to hear exactly what the actors, directors, writers and even production designers thought about making the episode, the movie, or whatever - you'll know sometimes the best parts of DVDs are hearing the commentaries. Getting into an actor's feelings about the character they play, getting the background behind a writer's plans and metaphors, even just getting the stupid anecdotal stuff that makes you laugh, it's all good.
Pick a fic I've written, any fic, or even a short story arc, if you like, anything I've done and I'll give you the dvd-style "What the hell was I thinking?" commentary thing--though you might want to specify characters, or storyline, or plot. (You can ask more specific questions as well. Or you can not, and just let me ramble on at will.)

Date: 2004-01-26 11:15 pm (UTC)Scream is the fic I'm proudest of, but oddly enough I wasn't even a huge fan of the pairing when I first wrote it. It started w/my looking simply for Yuber fics on ff.net. I got so fed up w/the bad yuber/albert fics I wanted to see if I could write a good one (I didn't find yours until later).
Mostly I just wanted to keep the two IC - which meant nothing between them was going to be particularly nice. Albert's damned ruthless & cold, Yuber is...well, Yuber. Neither struck me as actually needing/wanting anyone else, that's the hardest part of the pairing. So it would have to be something else - control seemed the one thing the two had in common.
Yuber always interested me because he doesn't seem to care about being used, even though he could easily kill his "bosses." Once I considered that, and began to question why he acts like this, the actual story shaped itself. Because Albert is only interested in one thing - gaining power. He's a Silverburg through & through in my eyes, a very powerful one. Yuber seems to like to break the strong, and Albert will do anything to avoid being the loser.
Is that sufficient, or is there something more you'd like explained?

Date: 2004-01-27 04:04 am (UTC)Your line of reasoning on Yuber and Albert is very similar to mine. I agree totally that it's not entirely intuitive what exactly Yuber and Albert each GET out of any relationship they might have. Albert's easier to figure out because Yuber IS skilled and useful. And to be honest, a lot of my plots come from Yuber, from some quirk of his personality that Albert discovers. They may be told from Albert's pov, but they're YUBER'S stories. :) And he just likes it for the amusement value. When you're as old as he is and care nothing for the baser things like money and political power, what's left but keeping yourself amused?

Date: 2004-01-26 11:26 pm (UTC)"What the hell was I thinking," is a good way to put it. I think of all my fics, I like that one least. It gave me hell.
The initial idea actually came from my brother, from whom I begged help b/c I was drawing an utter blank. He's the one that suggested the sword break (I had a choice of sparda, virgil, and alastor. I figured the sword was the easiest). The rest was up to me, and doing my best to stick w/the game I played up the part where Dante actually gets Alastor. Ah - it was also my brother's idea that he look somewhat like Virgil, so that I could "have the sword and the incest." So far as the devotion itself goes, I just played with the fact that Dante seems fond of his weapons - the sword from his father is obvious, but he also named his guns. I figured that fondness could work both ways, and maybe go a bit further.
So far as Alastor himself is concerned, I just didn't want the long haired, silver eyed, delicate bishie boy that I usually see him as in DMC fics. I wanted him sort of like Dante, but less serious.
Overall I guess it worked, but this and my Borus/Percy fic would be a lot better as short series rather than one-shots.

Date: 2004-01-26 11:49 pm (UTC)Presents? Don't you dare - I still haven't sent out the little something I managed to get for you in France.
IW eh? That started with my story wishlist - I'd always wanted to write a story about vampires, one about elves, and one about a genie. Given my general dislike of the first two, nanowrimo seemed a great chance to try for the genie thing.
First off was the genie himself. It never made sense to me that genie's were always all powerful, etc. and moreover not upset about being slaves (which I always had the impression they were, even before the Disney movie). My first thought was that a pissed off genie would be awesome. That immediately led me to the type of owner that would give him a run for his money - a genuinely good guy that nevertheless doesn't have a problem with arguing and the like.
Even more important, I did't want the story controlled by the wishes. I wanted a genie story that didn't involve the "you get three wishes" premise. That led to recreating what a genie was, making me wonder where they come from - that's where Nomolos comes from. The entirety of the story was shaped around the fact that Kasi was summoned by mistake and then enslaved.
The inclusion of demons and angels came from the one class I took on islam, where I learned the belief that angels are made of light, humans are made of earth, and sort of b/t the two are djinn - spirits made of fire. And where you have angels, you have demons. It's where we get the term genie. I figured if I was going to write about one, I'd write about all of them.
Good? Something more you want explained?
Oh yeah - the chocolate factory. I tried to come up with the most ridiculous business for demons to own. I also did it to tie the story just slightly with Rainbow. I don't know if anyone ever noticed - Darrell is constantly in talks with Lord Enterprises, and it's Xavier Lord that's coming to visit them.
