We've been chatting over email about various songs, mostly sad ones (b/c I tend not to like them but then Sammie pointed out like a dozen exceptions) and this is one of them. It's not as sad as some others, and it's actually rather pretty in a way. Plus old west, sung by Garth Brooks, can't go wrong there.

And I always like songs that tell a story.

She was a girl on a wagon train
Headed west across the plains
The train got lost in a summer storm
They couldn't move west and they couldn't go home
Then she saw him ridin' through the rain
He took charge of the wagons and he saved the train
And she looked down and her heart was gone
The train went west but she stayed on
In Lonesome Dove.

A farmer's daughter with a gentle hand
A blooming rose in a bed of sand
She loved the man who wore a star
A Texas Ranger known near and far
So they got married and they had a child
But times were tough and the West was wild
So it was no surprise the day she learned
That her Texas man would not return
To Lonesome Dove.

(chorus)
Back to back with the Rio Grande
A Christian woman in the devil's land
She learned the language and she learned to fight
But she never learned how to beat the lonely nights
In Lonesome Dove, Lonesome Dove.

She watched her boy grow into a man
He had an angel's heart and the devil's hand
He wore his star for all to see
He was a Texas lawman legacy
Then one day word blew into town
It seemed the men that shot his father down
Had robbed a bank in Cherico
The only thing 'tween them and Mexico
Was Lonesome Dove.

The shadows stretched across the land
As the shots rang out down the Rio Grande
And when the smoke had finally cleared the street
The men lay at the ranger's feet
But legend tells to this very day
(legend tells to this very day)
That shots were comin' from an alleyway
Though no one knows who held the gun
There ain't no doubt if you ask someone
In Lonesome Dove.

~In Lonesome Dove, by Garth Brooks

And I suppose I should really get to ficathon stuff but ugh I hate sitting down doing html crap for that long. Mergh.

One of use should totally write the son's story. ^_^

And I can do the ficathon stuff if you really want. Are you just doing the master list?

My initial plan had been to upload the profiles to my webspace, then link to those and each of the stories, then do a list of the ones up for grabs. I just don't feel like it *is being lazy and childish* I'll do it tonight, probably.

and you're the old west fan, so I vote you ^_~

Shit, that's a lot more ambitious than I'd've been. I had no idea how you were going to do the stories we had, but I was just going post all the profiles to the comm. But I was going to give it a few more days--'til about Wednesday--before doing that.

But... I've already got Zane and Christian and Casper and Red... you need to write a Western now. *puppy eyes* please?

Okay, we can do it your way ^^; And Wed works, maybe we'll get a coule more stories by then (Meg emailed me to say she really wanted to sub hers, but works is kicking her ass, btw. I told her cool).

Heh. Lemme read your Louis books to get a better feel, b/dc it's just not a settng I feel comfortable trying (but I can manage deserts? though I'm probably botching that horribly, heh).

I never said your way was bad. Far be it from me to save myself the hassle and work say no to such a neat idea. ^_^ I just figured in the case of the free profiles, it might be more... accessible, I guess, to put them up on comm.

So... am I marking Meg's character as still "in play"?

Oh, 'cause my lousy-ass Westerns are such authentic masterpieces. ^_^

I like your way, it sounds easier. But I can still do it my way, like I said I'm just being lazy.

Yeah, in play.

Probably better than what I'd come up with. But there will be no polyanna!

Well, whatever way you like. I just don't want you thinking I'm dictating, is all.

awesome. Let me go mark that now.

I doubt it. I tend to think your stuff is better than mine most of the time. Dude... I can count on one hand the number of times a horse has been refered to by name in a L'Amour--and I don't think any of those have been by the main char.

EVIL DICTATING H0R

Well that's good to know. I hate coming up with animal names.

Well... I'll agree to the 'evil h0r' part, but I may have to challenge you on the rest.

heh, the two some side char in my current book just ordered saddled for the main are named Sam and Dave. How... plain.

I don't think such terminology was employed in the Wild Wild West. Not until I find a time machine, anyway.

D'aww. :/

In the spirit of melancholy songs, here is an awkward, droopy number:

Scourge of the Sea - Water Wings

(I have been listening to it on loop for days. XD)
