Did something happen in the news that we're suddenly pushing gay rights with extra fervor? I didn't think it was gay rights week or something, but then again I keep forgetting my own birthday is next week. Did someone say/do something stupid? Yargh, I need to keep up with the news more. About the only thing I've heard so far is the Amish shooting, which is heart breaking.

Not that I know of. Actually, now that I think of it, it is a month before elections, and I bet some states have gay rights related questions on their ballots. It think this is the first year in... a lot of years that Maine does not. They finally voted conclusively last year that we do, in fact, have basic human rights.

I would guess that's what the meme is about.

Oh!!! Also, some creep on mediaminer is reporting all slash stories for any infraction. Could be a retaliation against that.

*shrugs*

Also, as a reminder, your birthday is next week.^^ In case you've forgotten again.

Ah, elections. That would explain it.

d00d, I wish I had so much free time in my life I could spend it combing mediaminer for stories to report.

Heh. I'm actually only remembering it now b/c I wound up with 30+ drabbles to write and should probably get cracking ^^;;;

I shudder to think that I might have kids one day that grow up in a world where people still have such a problem with this @_@;;

And I didn't know about the mediaminer thing o_O Good lord

Word. And with the internet bullying and people shooting up schools... I'm rather glad to be childless this week.

Ja, as Maderr said, who has the time?

Hi, sorry, not meaning to be creepy or anything - I'm something of a lurker on maderr's LJ, and I feel like I should know you. We're both from Maine and apparently have similar interests and even more than one mutual friend(as I noticed when I checked your profile after I noticed you mentioning Maine, because, um, Maine pride? We're not a very big state, after all.)

So sorry to bother you, but hello, I've decided you are awesome.

(and sorry maderr for sort of spamming your journal)

The only thing I can think of is the shit going down with Rep. Foley, but this seems a rather exreme reaction to that.

Is everyonen in this country a closet voyeur?

Granted, they probably shouldn't have been exchanging im's of a 'lurid nature' on the clock but sheesh.

I need to go back and read this more carefully, I started laughing too hard.

You know when some of us are in the mood for smut, we just read/watch porn. We don't start major scandals. Man, that requires too much goddamn work. Reading porn is tons easier.

This article is making my head hurt.

So, Sammikins, tell me if I'm following.

This Foley guy exchanged improper but mostly harmless emails with a page (and I have yet to see how old this page was...). Okay, they slappedh is wrist. Now, ever so conveniently right around the elections, the newspapers (or was it a news show?) decide to reveal all the lurid, nasty aims this dude and the page exchanged (on work comps! st00pid! Boys, think with the big head!)

BUT the investigation being launched isn't whether or not Foley and the Page were actually misbehaving, or whether or not Foley crossed too many lines, but is in fac about why Hastert didn't go ape shit on Foley's ass. "We're investigating you for not properly investigating a case of man/boy fooling around on office time even though they guy you asked about it said the matter had been dealt with"

Or did I start reading too fast again?

From: [identity profile] maderr.livejournal.com

Oh, wait. They are investigating Foley...who is apparently an alcoholic? With a taste for bishounen. Huh.

This is news how? Shouldn't this sort of shit be kept lowkey?

Stars, keep me away from fsking politics.

I don't think it would be such a big deal except the page was so young, and it's possible whoever leaked it to the press knew it had been going on for months before finally leaking it--which is just as wrong, really.

Yeah, I'm follwing now. Always slow on this shit, me. All I see is the huge fsking mess that everyone makes of it. Stars, I really hope Hastert gets to punch someone.

It's gotten kinda convoluted over the past couple days. Trust me, you're not being slow.

Latest I heard it had actually been going on for years, per the newspapers. And it had been reported to various people, who happened to be Republicans, and nothing happened til it came out in the paper which finally made Foley resign. Don't know how old the pages were, though one did caution Foley that he needed to be careful as the he/the kid was underage.

This is what I know

A) I think the page was like 16, so you can understand the problem everyone is having.

B) The information was leaked first to the press anyone. That's how this all broke, anyway. The Dems are saying Hastert (and pretty much the right) knew about it long ago, but were trying to keep it under wraps and keep it from coming out until after the elections.

C) Hastert's saying, "fuck you very much; I knew shit about this so much as a week ago." And he's bent. He wants to know knew about it (and thus leaked it to the press), and why whoever it was went to the press first instead of the authorities. He also wants to know how long this person knew about it before deciding to leak it to the press.

A) Ah, yes, that would be a problem. Though by the same token, why the fucking hell was the kid (up, answered my own question) replying? Still, bad Foley.

B & C) Gotcha. I hope Hastert gets to punch someone. Hopefully a democrat.

D) Foley is a dumbass, or sounds like one. Just as an aside.

I found a timeline here. It sounds like it started off with the 16 year old from LA. who wnet through the channels to get the contact stopped, but that the email he got wasn't that explicit, but that there were other pages around the same time who were getting explicit messages that hadn't reported it or that Hastert claims he wasn't aware of?

Politics in general are scuzzy. *makes face* I hate that when you vote, it's pretty much a race to vote for the person who's the least jackass-like because they're all jackasses. >_>

Iiiinteresting. What a debacle. People make such big deals about sexual harassment programs and shit so people are protected in situations like this...yet ultimately nothing is ever satisfactorily done.

Politics and business, man. I hate them both.

He's saying it was the alcohol. Mel Gibson Syndrome, apparently. Is the brand of alcohol, do you think? One makes you anti-Semitic, the other makes you a pedaphile?

Ick. It's just such a cop out for him to say that. For them both to say that. On a personal level, how do you ever face your inner demons if you won't acknowledge that they exist and how do you rectify and correct your mistakes if you refuse to take ownership of them, and on a bigger level, how do you explain those mistakes and apologize to the people that they hurt if you can't even admit that you were the one responsible for making them?

Sadly, few are as ruthlessly honest with themselves as you, my darling Skylark. If they were, I don't think they'd be politcians, business men, or even movie stars...most of them, anyway.

It's the same reason my asshat IAM gets away with the shit he's done, making a pass at me probably one of his lesser crimes from the stories I've heare, is that the alcohol made him do it!

And yet, any rational personal will tell you that drinking isn't really an excuse. If you're liable for driving while drinking, you're liable for any all else you do while drinking.

Sadly, logic never failed to sway anyone before. Still, you should jot that down somewhere. It's quite quoatable.

I just mean what you say is dead on - but it's one of those things people never think of until they hear it. Like not seeing the forest for the tress, though that's not *quite* right.

Yeah, I know...In a perfect world. >_>

Re your IAM boss: Alcohol made him do it my ass. The fucking pervert. He thinks because he's older and higher up, that it's okay for him to do inappropriate shit like as long as he can claim that he did it because he was drunk. It's no excuse, and it makes him one hell of an icky person. But, I'm probably not saying anything you don't already know. ^_^;; Seriously, I really wanted to kick him in the balls when I saw the post where you'd written that. It's one thing when my dirty old men customers are hitting on someone ten or twenty years younger than them. They don't have any control over my job, my life, or anything that occurs in it except for the two or three minutes when I'm ringing them up. It's another thing entirely when it's a dirty old man that's your boss or your boss's boss. That's crossing a line.

It's great that things are shifting civilian-wise, but personally I'd be happy right now if the assholes in congress banned the "don't ask don't tell" policy right off the bat.
It suxsuxsuxsux hiding it from everyone you work with.
Of course, the thought of finally becoming a civilian only to have to be just as careful is really depressing T_T

I should pay more attention to current events, yes? o_O;
Amish Shooting, tho.. did hear about that. Good god. That was insane.

Had absolutely no idea where to put this, but it has to do with the whole Foley situation. Isn't it rumored that the Democrats can take over the House in the next election, and with Foley being a Republican...well, you can imagine. Everyone loves a scandal. So the whole bringing Foley out now gives Democrats a better chance of winning a majority in Congress, which potentially helps winning the Presidential election in 2008.

Erm, does that make sense? And uh, sorry if this has already been expounded upon.
