Some of my packages came in today ^__^

Got Rin Vol. 2, The Count of Monte Cristo, and bad! vampire book Running Dry b/c I obviously need professional help.

Speaking of bad books, I am trying hard to like Iris Print's A Strong and Sudden Thaw. I realize the fact that I was bitterly disappointed by Connections and When Worlds Collide have braced me to hate this one too, so I'm making a strong effort to like it.

I can't. I'm a huge fan of "if the world was destroyed by *insert disaster* this is what could result" books. Also in that category are things like 'V for Venddetta' and all. I've read everything from 1984 to The Stand to Oryx and Crake. I'm trying to be snotty and say I'm some sort of expert, b/c I most def am not -- but I am a fan. This book isn't convincing me. They know phrases like 'ecosystem' and 'bacteria' but call cars 'metal carriages' ? There are so many more contradictions that are driving me batshit - and I'm only about to page thirty. Reading this book so far is like pulling teeth. Perhaps I should put it aside until I can be a little less bitchy.

I'm changing the subject before I start ranting. It can wait until I start putting my reviews up on my website or something, though maybe I should just be honest and call it 'tirades of a bitchy bookaholic' or something. I couldn't do an impartial review to save my life. Bah.

What am I waiting on still? Ah. Junjo Romantica 2. And for some reason B & N is telling me Love Pistols is delayed. We'll see if I can't find it out shopping tomorrow.

There's a woman at work, a temp, who thinks I'm amusing as goddamn hell. She was talking to the boss lady about liking it there and all, and I sort of heard her say something like that "and that one there, she's something else" and I looked up when they went silent and realized they were staring at me ^^:;; I don't know why, exactly, but she's vastly amuzed, nigh on fascinated I think, by my spazzy self. It also amuzez everyone to no end how much I like books >_> Why is that such a weird thing to geeek over?

If anyone likes more serious fiction, btw, and doesn't mind a rather sad end, The Meaning of Night: A Confession by Michael Cox is excellent. It's heartbreaking to see it all play out, but I'm not sorry I read it. Still in hardback, though. I got it mad cheap 'cause I am a book h0r with skillz.

Okay, enough blathering. This post was completely and utterly pointless.

Oh, hey, tell me if Monte Cristo is good. A friend rec'd the movie to me and I then had to buy it and I made screencaps a few days ago and I really ought to make my pretty icons like I meant to.. >.>;;

It's an awesome book. I haven't read it in years and years, so I don't remember much. I do know I hated the last fucking movie hollywood put out, where he winds up with the chick he'd been planning to arry like everything is peachy fucking keen. *stabs hollywood again for good measure*

Aaaah, what did you think of Oryx and Crake? I saw Margaret Atwood when she came for a visit to campus and she was a-maz-ing beyond belief and so articulate and beautiful I wanted to weep.

I loved that book. Margaret Atwood rocks; I totally hate you for seeing her. Have been in love with her stories since I read A Handmaid's Tale years ago. Oryx, though - that story was badass.

I know! That book was sweet. I know it was along the same vein as A Handmaid's Tale, but I feel like it was a much more thoroughly realized novel. I liked AHT, but I loved O&C. I actually got into Atwood through her poetry first. I picked up a slightly tea-stained volume in the local thrift store on a whim when I was in my moody, pubescent, Ani-DeFranco-listening days. If you haven't read any of her poetry, I highly suggest it. I reccomend her Selected Poetry, Volume II. The poem "The Woman Who Could Not Live With Her Faulty Heart" was the first one I flipped half-interestedly to, and it got me hooked. Another particular favorite of mine is "Eating Snake."

And I love this one thing she said about how poetry is like picking up a rock, meditating, and putting the rock back and books are like poking the rock with a stick to see what happens. Heh. And her religious affiliation of "pessimistic pantheist" if I recall correctly. She mentioned it at the lecture. She was like, "It means God is everywhere, but he's losing" or something. ^^;

Um, shutting up with the massive fangirling now.

BTW, I am getting a box together to send you. Is there anything that you'd particularly like me to send from NC?

Speaking of Connections, the box is all ready and shit, but I don't think D's yet managed the time to get it off. He's been getting off kinda late at work. *shrug* Excuses, whatever. I suck.

Yeah, well. I'm sure all the "I'm sending it out," "sorry I haven't sent it yet" get rather damn old after awhile. Just... y'know... letting you know.
