read this article on the bus
Mar. 14th, 2007 07:26 pm(from the actual magazine, obviously)
It seems pretty damn cool
I wish I could blather on, but I do not trust myself to sound intelligent about anything scientific. It was a lot of fun to read though.
Now someone motivate me to write, 'cause this entire week so far I've been very stumped and frustrated even though I want badly to work on something.
Maybe it's time to open drabbles again...maybe this weekend.

On a related note, what they were saying about when our ancestors moved out of Africa, that's a fairly recent genetic study. They traced mitochondrial DNA (only passed through the matrilineal line), I think, though it could have been some other genetic strand or something, back to one female in Africa. I'm not even sure if they determined if this female was actually "human" as we think of ourselves or if that's just when the mutation that gave way to the human species occured.
Of course they call her "Eve" *rolls eyes*

Date: 2007-03-15 12:34 am (UTC)My favorite parts:
"Instead, evolution played Mr. Potato Head, putting different combinations of features on ancient hominids then letting them vanish until a later species evolved them." and
"For decades the reigning view had been that hunting prowess and the ability to vanquish competitors was the key to our ancestors' evolutionary success (an idea fostered, critics now say, by the male domination of anthropology during most of the 20th century). But prey species do not owe their survival to anything of the sort, argues Sussman. Instead, they rely on their wits and, especially, social skills to survive."
XD!! I like the way that even though science is based on logic and evidence and proving things, it is ever changing. (And, like History, it's fun to find/see the patterns and the biases. ^_^;;)[/dork]
