I love this man to death. I have read and reread his books more than any other book in my collection and only a precious handful come even close.

My mother and I commented on this, and I think skylark may have been to remark on it a bit later -- I am hardcore into fluff. Into sparkles and light. But I love horror just as much. Person of extremes, me. I am white or black. I wear a yinyang to remind myself there is a way to balance those without driving everyone fucking batshit, though most of the time I fail. Still, a book that scars you for life (no one in my household will a) sleep with closet door open 7) let limbs hang over the bed when we sleep or XII) go anywhere near a fucking clown) is as good as a happily ever after. Growing up, I remember King was one of the precious few authors whose books she would get in hardback. When I was allowed to start reading his stuff, I realized why ^__^

Wandering off subject. [livejournal.com profile] ribald_tales is reading It now and though I'm extremely fond of The Stand I really do think I stand with my mom, who is wholly responsible for my taste in books ^__^, in saying that It is my favorite. This will make the third time I've read it and it still creeps me the fuck out. I will probably read it a bajillion times more before I die.

If you think horror is stupid hollywood blood and gore fics you've no idea what real horror is. I know there are plenty of people who dont' like King, I think largely because the man is prone to going on and on -- but that only makes the horror worse, trust me x_x

I have a funny story that sort of relates to It but it's slightly spoilery, I guess, of that book, that shows just how bad this book gets to me. Never fails to make everyone laugh at me. Will put behind cut at end of post ^___^

This post is rambly and dumb, but I love King and had to say that in my meandering way. He is the only author whose books can scare me, and the only author who has ever made me cry (and it was his short story The Last Rung On The Ladder which did it).

Spring Break of...my senior year? I think. I'd decided to stay alone in the apartment I shared with two others (tenshi and gomi-chan <3) and just fsking relax. At that time, King's Dreamcatcher had come out recently and I'd been dying to read it. As a treat, I thought I'd walk up to the movie based upon it when it opened. In order to do this, I had about a day to read the book (the movie fucking sucked and was so unlike the book it was beyond stupid).

For those that don't know King, many of his stories take place in the same general area, or somehow tie back to this area in Main. Dreamcatcher takes place in the same town as It, and more than a few of his books tie together all the horror that takes place in this area - it's hard to explain the subtle way he weaves shit together. You literally have to read all his books a couple of times each to even start to appreciate it.

Anyway, late in Dreamcatcher the characters come upon this monument dedicated to the children who died in this flood. I won't even explain everything. But written across the monument, I think carved into it, are the words

It's back.

Now, see. It should be dead. They well and truly defeated him. That he suddenly pops up in the middle of a book that had nothing the fuck to do with him? With a message that is distinctly ominous (and trust me, those two little words translate into "You bitches be well and truly fucked")? When Megan was all alone in a creaky apartment on a more or less empty campus?

I fucking freaked and called my mommy.

She didn't pick up the phone, but the answering machine came on so Megan started shouting (literally, I assure you) something along the lines of "Goddamn it woman! You didn't fucking tell me about the part where It comes back. Pick up the phone--"

And my evil fucking mother picks up the phone laughing.

Life in the Derr house is many things, but boring is not one of them.

With King 'tis best to start small. My mom almost never restricted my reading growing up, in fact often threw books at me. But a lot of bodice rippers I couldn't read at first (b/c of the sex) and King she started off actually reading to me, and at first only let me read his short stories.

I def reccomend that route, and Nightmares and Dreamscapes and Night Shift are his best collections ^__^

horror scares me T.T Because you know people say it's not real but...meg, i come from a line of pagan priestesses and mediums. I have relatives(distant as they are) who are regularly possessed. so horror? not for me thanks. too close to home.

the only King book i've read is "on writing" which i recommend even if you know how to write well (which you do) its different from his other books and hilarious. if you haven't read it i highly recommend it.

*cackles right along with mum*

What did your ma think of the end of the Dark Tower books? Was she a lover or a hater? You were always more into his short stories than his novels, so I'm assuming you haven't read them... XD
