(this a perk of being a writer - I have excuses to justify my weirdness)

what are some 'talkative' animals? birds esp. would be best. they're obviously noisy by nature, but are there some which are particulary chatty, so to speak?

Dogs tend to bark when around each other?

Do you mean chatty with each other, or chatty with humans? Because our cat never really shuts up, especially when he's around Mom.

Heh. It's all good. I may have to give it up, cause I need a fairly solitary animal, and I mostly wanted a type of bird since that's the general theme here. Ah, well. Thanks ^__^

Second the monkeys and squirrels, and by association, chipmunks (and prairie dogs, I guess). I actually tend to think of cats as quieter than some others, though perhaps they're more chatty around certain people. Donkeys?

Mockingbirds? I know they have a tendency to mimic what they hear in their surroundings. You live in an area where car alarms go off, your mockingbirds are going to be sounding like car alarms when they're chattering. They're pretty good at imitating baby cries too.

Northern Mockingbird

You could try googling larks or songbirds if you're looking for something else?

All parrots and parakeets are particularly chatty by nature (which I think is part of what drives them to imitate things around them). A lot of parrots and parakeets are also pair-bonding by nature though, so not necessarily solitary. Some are more reserved than others (the larger African Grey Parrots are fairly reserved) but they're all curious animals.

I think canaries are fairly solitary? I think people normally house male singing canaries in their own cages. Are you looking for intelligence or just chattiness + preference for solitude?

I own parrots, if it's not obvious =)

It's really more a personality thing, actually. Animal-spirit type, but not quite. I should have explained better, but I'm only figuring it out slowly myself. But there is a theme of birds throughout the story, and the MC is extremely chatty and friendly and sings a great deal.

Hmm, mockingbird might be perfect. ^_^

A bird that sounds like a car alarm? I'd be practicing my shooting on the birds and the car owners.

Hyenas count?

Coyote and wolves can be noisy too.

As for birds... crows, seagulls, northern cardinal, Atlantic canary... Humm...

Oh! And the mourning dove is especially talkative! We used to have them around my mother's house... They never shut up!

Ahh.

Amazon parrots (they're mostly green with different markings depending on what type of amazon parrot they are) are one of the better talkers and are known for singing. You can find videos on youtube. They're amusing =)

Unless you want something quiet and intelligent... (Dogs can be intelligent when it comes to their owner)

Um... Fish? Let's see... you alreay said birdies... birds o' paradise... Monkeys. Foxes. Owls. Fishies. Wild dogs of Africa! Now that's an intelligent dog.

Moles. They seem chatty.

In Hawaii zebra doves and myna birds are pretty chatty.

Prairie dogs never shut up. But they don't hang out alone so they'd be unusual animal companions.

I dunno, I'm from weird parts of the world :P Mockingbirds seem to be literary favorites but I have no personal experience with them.

Don't know if these translate to where ever you have set the fic but in the UK - any of the crow-family (crows, rooks, ravens, choughs, magpies and jays) are pretty noisy and inclined to make a variety of sounds. Pigeons and doves are always muttering to themselves or each other, not particularly solitary though. Starlings are incredibly noisy, squabble a lot and gather into very large roosting flocks in the winter - they also imitate telephones and other annoying sounds. Chattering birds tend to be the flocking sorts - the solitary ones are quieter because they are solitary and don't have anyone to talk to! Chickens are noisy too. All the parrot family as mentioned. Nightingales sing prettily and are fairly noisy between songs - but only for about 6 or 8 weeks a year! Larks might be good - solitary singers - but fairly silent on the ground.

Jackdores are rather noisy. We feed the wild birds and if you put fat balls with seeds out a jackdore family would line the kids up ont he railings at 4am and feed them. Very. Noisy. Needless to say they only get fat balls in the winter.

Also foxes make strange barks. And Cows. Sheep when distressed too. Dogs also.

chatty birds

The Kookaburra is known for it's laughter. You can often hear a Kookaburra laughing on the Tarzan soundtracks. These birds are Australian and are mostly solitary, eating snakes, snails, frogs etc. They belong to the kingfisher family I think.

I believe hyenas might have a fairly large vocabulary, and dingos, wild dogs, horses and other pack type animals? I'm not sure about coyotes. Foxes? Elephants?

The squirrels in our backyard are particularly chatty with each other and they frequently scold both the dogs and us. And then the crows and the seagulls that are for some reason everywhere around school are rather loud, and not particularly shy either.

Cats, it definitely has to be cats. In my family's case its a Norwegian Forest Cat named Neko. My poor mother has been known to run down the hall way yelling "Im going to kill you! Just shush for five minutes or we'll be eating dim sims!" Neko's reply. "Meooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!!!" Whilst in pursuit.
