(this a perk of being a writer - I have excuses to justify my weirdness)

what are some 'talkative' animals? birds esp. would be best. they're obviously noisy by nature, but are there some which are particulary chatty, so to speak?

blue jays and sparrow flocks (wake me up why don't you?!?) cats can be chatty, as well as all hound dogs. canis (wild dogs) like to announce thier presence sometimes.

Don't know if these translate to where ever you have set the fic but in the UK - any of the crow-family (crows, rooks, ravens, choughs, magpies and jays) are pretty noisy and inclined to make a variety of sounds. Pigeons and doves are always muttering to themselves or each other, not particularly solitary though. Starlings are incredibly noisy, squabble a lot and gather into very large roosting flocks in the winter - they also imitate telephones and other annoying sounds. Chattering birds tend to be the flocking sorts - the solitary ones are quieter because they are solitary and don't have anyone to talk to! Chickens are noisy too. All the parrot family as mentioned. Nightingales sing prettily and are fairly noisy between songs - but only for about 6 or 8 weeks a year! Larks might be good - solitary singers - but fairly silent on the ground.
