maderr: (What are you reading?)

I like books that have words I don't know. If I have to go get the dictionary, that's fun for me. Sometimes I do it just to doublecheck I know what a word means, after all, when it's used in an unusual way.

Still, sometimes writers need to think a bit more. I'm sure I'm guilty of it, somewhere, somehow, cause lord know I'm far from perfect and people make mistakes - but come one. Would a servant whose sole task is to care for his master's would think of his life thus

Day in and day out, Evander's life was ful of altocalciphilic criticism...*

Are we serious? I didn't even know wtf that was, maybe I'm failing at life. A fetish for high heels? I'm not even sure it fits, cause up until this point the guy is obsessed but the impression is that he's obsessed/anal retentive about many things.

But, even if he does, the point remains that a lowly uneducated servant boy is probably not going to know such a random ass term. However, I concede maybe it's just me.

This book also had the dumb as fuck ghost story, no I don't care if I'm being harsh -__- There was nothing creative about it, though it does hold the dubious honor of giving me a new favorite alternate description for cock/erection:

His erection, pointing straight up twoard the ceiling from its patch of wiry pubic hair like an organic silo, forced him to admit the extent to which Dominic Whitman aroused him.**

I was on the bus when I read that little jewel. They all looked at me when I started laughing hysterically.

I stopped reading Tangled to read Wicked Gentlemen. Which, eh. It's okay so far. It doesn't really match the blurb on the back, and at times it tries too hard to be High Literature, but it's not all bad. It just reminds me of every other story that has Inquisitors/Interegators/Scary Guys That Dress in Black and Administer Justice. To be fair, there are elements I like. It's not all smut, and so far there's been no graphic sex at all. Go book for relying on other stuff. The demon aspect is interesting (though, so little is actually done with it, I wonder if there 's really a point in such a melodramatic race, when something more mundane would have worked just fine), and I like Harper... Need to finish it, I've got about a 100 pages left, then we'll see. It's definitely good, but I don't think I'd say it's great. Maybe I'm just becoming too picky.

* Lord Ronan's Shoes, from Tangled and I should say here it was an okay story. Not great, but not awful. I just thought that was a bad word choice.
** The Lost Gentleman, from Tangled
