maderr: (What are you reading?)

I like books that have words I don't know. If I have to go get the dictionary, that's fun for me. Sometimes I do it just to doublecheck I know what a word means, after all, when it's used in an unusual way.

Still, sometimes writers need to think a bit more. I'm sure I'm guilty of it, somewhere, somehow, cause lord know I'm far from perfect and people make mistakes - but come one. Would a servant whose sole task is to care for his master's would think of his life thus

Day in and day out, Evander's life was ful of altocalciphilic criticism...*

Are we serious? I didn't even know wtf that was, maybe I'm failing at life. A fetish for high heels? I'm not even sure it fits, cause up until this point the guy is obsessed but the impression is that he's obsessed/anal retentive about many things.

But, even if he does, the point remains that a lowly uneducated servant boy is probably not going to know such a random ass term. However, I concede maybe it's just me.

This book also had the dumb as fuck ghost story, no I don't care if I'm being harsh -__- There was nothing creative about it, though it does hold the dubious honor of giving me a new favorite alternate description for cock/erection:

His erection, pointing straight up twoard the ceiling from its patch of wiry pubic hair like an organic silo, forced him to admit the extent to which Dominic Whitman aroused him.**

I was on the bus when I read that little jewel. They all looked at me when I started laughing hysterically.

I stopped reading Tangled to read Wicked Gentlemen. Which, eh. It's okay so far. It doesn't really match the blurb on the back, and at times it tries too hard to be High Literature, but it's not all bad. It just reminds me of every other story that has Inquisitors/Interegators/Scary Guys That Dress in Black and Administer Justice. To be fair, there are elements I like. It's not all smut, and so far there's been no graphic sex at all. Go book for relying on other stuff. The demon aspect is interesting (though, so little is actually done with it, I wonder if there 's really a point in such a melodramatic race, when something more mundane would have worked just fine), and I like Harper... Need to finish it, I've got about a 100 pages left, then we'll see. It's definitely good, but I don't think I'd say it's great. Maybe I'm just becoming too picky.

* Lord Ronan's Shoes, from Tangled and I should say here it was an okay story. Not great, but not awful. I just thought that was a bad word choice.
** The Lost Gentleman, from Tangled

*blink*

Somehow I missed that description in "Lord Ronan's Shoes". As far as I remember, I skipped "The Lost Gentleman", so that little gem passed me totally by. *cracks up* Luckily for me, right now, I'm in an empty building, so no one to look sideways at me while I ROFL.

I really liked Wicked Gentelman, but it kind of reminded me of Storm Constantine's writing, which I am a total dork for.

The other one you mentioned I am going to put on my 'avoid at all costs' list.

I liked Wicked Gentlemen, too, but it seemed a little rushed in some places. Little leaps of plot, like an overachieving editor had wielded his red pen in a frenzy and didn't care what got cut. I was more pleasantly surprised with the way religion was treated; neither with kid gloves nor overbearing criticism. Too many authors eschew it entirely or give into the urge to air their own personal grudges.

Ah, you do make a good point. The religion element was well-handled indeed. And I agree about the rushed at points. She could easily have made two books out of this, instead of cramming two shorter stories into one.

Organic silo. Image. I see cows grazing in the brush. And grain explosions.

*dead from horrible, horrible snippet*

Peppermint Stew! The threats...oh the threats. XDXD corncats! And The Selkie No One Wanted was very full of awww and the sister made me mad. Stupid sister. ^^; I've started to imagine continuations for some of the stories XD; just because I liked them so much. *silly* I've also noticed that one in a while a word will be missing from a sentence. It's easy enough to fill in the blanks, but I just thought you might want that pointed out?

Also, I think it's very interesting and cool how you have such a wide variety of where things take place. Fantasy, half-fantasy/reality-fantasy, pure reality...very cool, and opens up a huge range of places. I know some good writers who can only really write for one setting really, and you have a way of matching your writing to the setting and making it fit, so that's nice.

But ugh, are you bad for my mon-existent sleep regimen.

I can see why you would be amused. I would be too. XD

As for the high heels fetish, a servant would never use such a term for the condition. Unless he put some research into it and wants to show off in front of other servants. I mean, it took me some time to find out what the term for hair fetish is (trichophilia), but you don't see me using it daily so people can marvel at my fancy speaking. ^^;;;;

Maybe it's because I'm not from the midwest, but does anyone actually get turned on by an organic silo?

They should take lessons from the people trying to spam me with penis enlargment drugs... they're actually getting closer to porn these days. :)

Organic silo indeed. And we all know that it's probably filled with white grain that explodes out if you don't keep the pressure down.

Going to hell...

Yeah. I always want to use large words, but then I have to go think of the character's education level. Then that leads to a lot of 'oh, phooeys.'

And that IS the funny description I have ever heard. WTF?
