Seriously. Why in the hell are vampires always bemoaning their goddamn fates? Screw that. No predator feels guilty for obtaining food. If food and sex are closely related, double plus bonus points, or something.

This is entirely random anyway, but have you read sunshine, by robin mckinley (sp?)? it has vampires in it. THAT ARE NOT ASHAMED TO BE EVIL. Even the 'good' vampire accepts the facts o.o

I've been trying to figure that out as well. The best I could come up with is some sort of guilt that they are taking away life from others and they walk a fine line between feeding and killing. And thus they are regretful that they feed, but are too selfish to just die for their fake, supposed anti-violence ideas.

Also there is the fear factor involved. If enough people fear and hate a being for what they are or have become, that can also cause said being to hate himself as well. Thus evil angst. And add on that the ostracization of the human race...

I would love to see a happy vampire who is not some sort of lolita or shouta, who doesn't have any problem with what they are, who has fun, helps old ladies across the street, and who just happens to drink blood from those who let him.

*Back row, fifth from the left timidly raising hand* Ummmm....I sorta kinda like the angst. If there is no conflict then would there be a story to be told? Angst is probably very hard to write though. You've got to run a very thin line between whining and making the reader not believe your characters. I know that when I read angst there are types I like and types where I just want to wring the writers neck. Luckily for me you've walked a tight rope or two and seem to be pretty steady!

I like angst. I write it plenty. I mean I don't like vampires being angsty and whiney about being vampires. I think it's stupid. After a while, you're going to adjust to being a vampire,and like someone else said - they feel bad enough to whine and hate themselves, but they dont stop doing it, do they?
