A theory on slash writers. My take is that she doesn't get us, and that we must have a thing against women/being women if we write male/male fiction/erotica/porn/whathaveyou. Really, she manages to say fuck nothing. Blah blah blah weirdos blah blah blah.

Rebuttals are all over the interwebs. I post the link mostly for amusement's sake. IMHO, she's a day late and a dollar short. This shit is a dead horse, poor thing. She should give the flogger to someone who can put it to better use.

Now, I go back to watching the male synchro diving. Because if men who train and train to move perfectly in time together, while wearing those lovely speedos and getting soaking wet, does not scream slash, what does?

My mind went to a totally naughty place when I read "give the flogger to someone who can put it to better use."

::giggles:: I refuse to be distracted from packing, not even for hot, wet men wearing barely anything. ^___^

Naughty was certainly the state to which my mind departed.

Hee hee. You should check out bleedtoblue's link. I was admiring it days and days ago.

yeah. I have no idea why I adore m/m; In real life, I'm a girl who likes girls. I figure I don't read f/f because I'm too critical -- I'd be thinking 'you're doing it wrong!' or 'what? what? No one likes that. Why would she like that?'

... So me reading m/m is probably more the equivalent of someone enjoying listening to people speak a foreign language -- just because it's different, and sounds pretty, and any grammar errors don't scream at you like they do in your own language.

(Okay, so maybe no one here hates gross, constant grammatical errors. But when someone starts a sentence with "ain't got no" or something, I just... yeah. But if they said something that hideous in another language, I wouldn't notice. So I'm going on the theory that I read m/m because any errors/oddities I can just assign to the fact that -- hey, they're guys. Maybe they DO work that way.)

Yeah, I didn't get that argument mainly because in hetero fics the author still needs to write about a piece of the human anatomy that s/he lacks. Unless this lady is inclined to write and/or read a piece of erotica that reads:

"And then he put his (ahem) male plumbing in her aching wet vagina".

My theory is, I've found so many people who write it well, whereas I can't seem to have any luck finding people who write good hetero stuff, that I just like reading slash more.

...

Yeah, I don't know. It's just...I don't know. It's awesomer. And that is a word now. So there. /random

Okay, not that I thought the rest of it was making lots of sense, but she lost me on the last two paragraphs. Clearly she failed at conclusions on her school papers.

Wonder what she would make of me. :P

Yeah, she's a shitty writer, in the end. No good thesis, no conclusion whatsoever, and weak arguments in between. A whole lot of nothin'

My theory has always been that there is no one theory that will explain why a lot of women like to read and write about gay men. Everyone has different reasons. There's really not much point in analyzing it to death.

However! I find fault with this woman's essay for a different reason (actually, a few reasons, but this one bugged me the most). She totally missed the point of the 'men have more freedoms than women' thing, and her arguments against it are piss-poor and address nothing. One of my friends once told me she enjoyed m/m because interactions between two men have a level of equality that she finds lacking in m/f interactions. It has nothing to do with societal expectations or the freedom to express one's love publically. It is purely based on what goes on between the two.

It seems to me as if she was so anxious to be rid of the idea so that she could present her "genius" theory that she kind of skipped over actually addressing it.

No comparable f/f genre? Rofl there's a ton of f/f porn written by men, it's just not directly comparable because it has a stroke story format rather than a romance novel format; the difference between yaoi/slash and yuri/lesbian porn is a simple and direct result of the difference between how male and female readers (writers usually being readers) prefer to consume their titillation.

I. I read that twice before I understood what she was actually saying. She writes about one point, barely finishes it, and ...fades away and moves on to her next point. WHY?

Also, I feel she could have been a lot more rude about it by jumoing on the christian and/or feminazi band wagon. As it stands now, we can only lol at her fail-ness, and wonder when she realises that Yes, there are a bunch of female authors who write slash that write BOTH kinds of slash. And Het. Jesus. The world does not fit into your carefully defined categories, precious. Now grow the fuck up. *rolls eyes*

What the huh?

Explicit sex scenes can appear in literature of every genre, as well as in "erotica" per se.

I'm not sure I understand her use of the "per se" in this sentence. o_O

I think she totally missed the point about men in historical fiction having more freedom than female characters. No one's saying they wouldn't have been executed if caught shagging. But two men could have been in the same room together and no one would have questioned the lack of a chaperone. Not to mention all the places they could access and stuff they could get away with just by nature of being men. Dumbass.

Yeah, she totally lost me on the conclusion. In fact, she lost the point of her thesis--which wasn't really all that clear to begin with. /fail

So I'll just ignore the woman's circuitous ramblings in favour of pretty men in tight smimming gear :D

Speaking of slash potential ... Well, today I was watching the British rowing team after they won, and one bloke hugs another in front of him, who leans back a little and you can see him mouth "I love you" XD. So cute! Sport, lol - it's so homoerotic, it's almost painful.

Or maybe I just read slash into everything ...

Yeah, that's probably it :D.

(And of course I just had to share this with someone *shrugs*)
