The saddest part of all of this is that I can alll too easily see writing more about these two, even though I *really* wanted this to be a short story. Blah.
Any advice welcome, as I've never done sci-fi before and I'm sure this is riddled with holes the size of star-cruisers. Mergh, just wait until I try to write the mind-fuck story I've stolen from
rykaine.
Back on topic; I had to html link b/c of the rather odd beginning of the story. LJ wouldn't let me arrange it properly.
So go and be frightened here.

I've always had a thing for half-breeds, humanoids, cross-species romance and... well, apparantly a lot of the things you have a thing for, too. XD XD XD
This makes me a very happy kid. :P

Happy is good. Thanks for reading!

Date: 2004-07-31 05:46 am (UTC)I loved Mendel. Both the description of him (so, so cool...I want scales ;_;) and the name. :3 I also liked the way he was fairly mild mannered on top of being a killer. That he was a scholar just made sense after that.
Sean was a cutie too. It took me a while to figure out what the in-lens and blocker were for, but I'm slow like that. I <3 the way he climbed on Mendel's lap like that too. I also like the kind of blunt ways he had of expressing himself and getting down to the point. It just made him a nice foil since it seemed like Mendel was a lot more shy about coughing up details. ^-^ It made their dialogue really fun to follow, and it made it really easy to not get bogged down by the new terminology.
*squeals and glomps you* Awesome story! A part of me really wants there to be another chapter, and another part of me thinks that you have the perfect ending there.
Still. Gyah! You rock. ^_____^

Date: 2004-07-31 09:12 am (UTC)My sister says I have a thing for scholarly characters. But it was too perfect (that and I had no idea how to write your more typical kind of killer >_>)
It took me a while to figure out what the in-lens and blocker were for, but I'm slow like that.
Nah, that's one of the rough spots I'm still working on. I tried to avoid it as much as possible, but some of it just was necessary. I think I get points though for going on and on about some spaceship XP
Thanks ^_^ And I can easily see where there would be more of them. I guess we'll see.
Speaking of awesome. Your 'Companion'? Too damn cute for words. It's up on the site, if you want to check and make sure everything is okay. It's utterly adorable. I'm not sure which boy is more snuggable, hee.
Will write email later, sort of slept in this morning and must run. Ja!

Date: 2004-07-31 08:17 pm (UTC)I kinda wondered what he was going to be like when I read that part there in the beginning in his prisoner description about him being a murderer. I think you pulled him off pretty damn well. It was easy to see that desperate situations would inspire him to desperate actions, and it wasn't much of a stretch from there to see why things went as far as they did with his father or how the system was already well on it's way to working against him. Gyah, I just loved him. Very passionate in his own way, but not in the same way that Sean is. (It's late, I'm not making any sense. It's just that Mendel is seemed to put more effort into trying to subdue and conceal his emotions while Sean was pretty much a straight forward kind of guy (all the more ironic since he was hiding a magical ability, but at the same time, I could understand that too. As long as he had his blocker in place, it was out of sight, out of mind. Just enough of it there to make him feel different and seperated from everoyne else, but not enough for it to be obvious to anyone else but himself.).)
It's up on the site, if you want to check and make sure everything is okay.
It's perfect. Thank you!! *tackle glomps*

Date: 2004-07-31 10:00 am (UTC)You should write about these two again! I would love to read the stories. XD.
For the most part, everything was explained during the course of the story, and I don't really see those "holes the size of star-cruisers" that you said. (Somehow though, it was obvious that Sean and the Draconis would have something to do with each other)
Anyways, yeah, hope you write more of this!

Date: 2004-08-02 11:04 am (UTC)I think the majority vote is that I *do* write more, so you'll probably see them again eventually ^_^ Thanks!
Eh...holes mostly referred to the fact that I wasn't sure all my genetic babble stuff held up. I'm sure it doesn't, but no one has pointed errors out yet so I must be doing okay for now.
Thanks again!!

^_~ I guess subtlety really isn't a strong point; but I didn't really think a guessing game was necessary here.

Date: 2004-07-31 06:35 pm (UTC)Thankee ^_^ I'm not really a sci-fi fan either, but I had an urge to give it a try. Glad it seems to have worked.

Date: 2004-08-01 04:03 pm (UTC)Honestly, it's rather reminiscent of Anne McCaffrey and the way she interweaves fantasy and sci-fi. Not enough people do that, in my opinion. If I could write pure sci-fi, I would, but alas! Only pure fantasy springs forth.
A scholarly killer! Love him!
And while I do like the ending because I have a distinct weakness for double entendres, I still feel that this is but a prologue or chapter one. Come to think of it, the whole thing feels like a synopsis for a longer story, all condensed into a short story. Lots of information all at once.
Mind-fuck? Yay! Can't wait!

Date: 2004-08-02 10:58 am (UTC)While I can tell that you're new to writing sci-fi simply because of the way you glossed-over the techno-babble
Heh, busted XP. That was a place I was scared to go. That and I hate when Sci-fi stories get bogged down with it.
Honestly, it's rather reminiscent of Anne McCaffrey and the way she interweaves fantasy and sci-fi.
That's probably my influence. I heart her Pern books.

I think just about everyone has said that, so it's probably going to become a series once I have a bit more free time.
Thankee muchly! ^_^

Date: 2004-08-01 10:56 pm (UTC)Your characterizations are awesome (*cough* by here I mean the snark especially *grin*) and the descriptions and dialogues are natural and without artifice... *sheepish* while I don't mind it, I'm not terrible fond of stories which go raving about the softness of feathers of the purple-ness of clouds in damn lyrical writing... so your stories definitely appealed to me in that bit ^^
Is it okay if I add you as a friend? *arch brow*

I'm sorry I kept you up!
I'm never very good at expressing my gratitude, but everything you've said means a lot to me.

*laughs* I don't have the patience for that. That's why I put so much dialogue in my stories - everything goes faster >_>
By all means! Thanks again *hugs*
