In Oliver Stone's three-hour drama, "Alexander," Colin Farrell, as the fourth-century Macedonian conqueror Alexander the Great, has a number of tender love scenes with his best friend, Hephaistion, played by a long-haired Jared Leto. In the film, which cost about $155 million to produce, Alexander is also married to Roxane, played by Rosario Dawson, but the marriage takes a back seat to his passion for his boyhood friend.

From this article, thank you [livejournal.com profile] nepenth for the hook up.

Want to see movie now!!!

Have you heard that greek lawyers are already suing the filmmakers, protesting their bisexual portrayal of Alexander?

Methinks a bit touchy?

Well, according to THIS ARTICLE, there is "no extensive evidence" for making Alexander a bisexual, which is what has those people all upset.

Of course if the movie was 100% historically acturate, it would probably be classified as a Docuementary, which I doubt many movie studios want.

As for the lawsuits, yea, a bit thin skinned, I think.

No extensive evidence, perhaps, but the relationship with his best friend was... beyond close, and it is certaingly understandable from my point of view, given the known relationship between Spartans (Sacred Band and all that...)

Yeah. There's been documentaries out the yin-yang...

Yeah, I read an article on it not long ago. Definitely touchy, especially for the Greeks. I mean, come on, they're notorious for playing loose and fast with sex and gender.

Well, given the Greek history of pederasty in certain societies of ancient Greece...

I'd say they're being a touch hypocritical, but other than that...

But I suppose that it's a bit like everyone deciding to play someone like Washington in such a light... I don't know whether or not we'd react too spectacularly to that, though.

As an historian, I'm all about accurately portraying people. But I'm also fully aware that getting too accurate makes for a very boring movie.

And we've butchered enough historical figures, if someone tried to bitch about a different country's portrayal of Washington, I'd track them down and beat them. IMHO Washington could use a makeover anyway XP

:-p

Yeah. And especially... with a slasher's mind, I think that there's something to be said about the fact that after Hephaistion died, Alexander didn't get out of bed, or eat for days.

But I suppose the majority of the world at large doesn't have a slasher's mind when it comes to certain RPS pairings...

Heh. Their loss. Life is much more entertaining with a slasher's mind.

Looks like it's getting really bad reviews. Of course, I don't expect that to stop you. ^^

Of course not. We slashers have learned to deal with bad stuff and just write lots of fics to make up for the suckage XP

(I mean, come on. There's apparently a slashdom for Jurassic Park 3)

Yeah, well the majority of folks there didn't like Seed of Chucky either so it's not like you can expect the masses to recognize brilliance.

And what does that comment have to do with squat?

Absolutely nothing.

Midgets masturbating.

That reminds me of some information on Spartans and the movie Troy I'd read a while back. ::dashes off to look it up::

When I first heard about the production of this movie, I was worried that they wouldn't portray him as bisexual. Now I'm happy. The story of him and Hephaistion is pretty interesting.

i do remember reading that for the most part many historians agree that alexander was bisexual (which was a norm thing back then. male bonding and all that for armies ^____^) but i have a feeling that like troy, this movie will do better internationally than in the us, but that doesn't mean i won't throw my money at it ^______^

Well, I think I know what you'll be seeing this weekend ^_-
(movie looks good though long...)

If by twist of fate you want to get together over this four day weekend (to see The Grudge or "other"), let me know. Well, let me know by end of the day Wednesday if you want to do anything on Friday. My Saturday I have no alternative possibilities to plan for (if nothing occurs, I will sit at home watching Utena). So, I leave that as an open invite to you (and others) to do something (perhaps come over and watch "films") that day.

Of course, The Grudge may not be in theatres anymore come Friday, and Andy has yet to if/when he may make an invitation for something.
