Digital cameras

There are two sparklies these days that I want, and which I would make good use of - one is an ipod, the other a digital camera. Of the two, the camera seems more practical (though if I get one more sketchy asshole on the bus harassing me I may go for the ipod - the headphones on my current player no longer work so it's getting harder and harder to avoid them).

Advice? Any recs? It's going to be my birthday present to myself, so I have time to save up a bit of money, though I'd like not to go over three hundred. There was one I loved, waterproof and shockproof, but the pricetag was a little high. I might get one of the kodak ones, they seem the best of the lot so far...

My sister was just telling me about her Olympus digicam. She says it's been functioning pretty well and hasn't required servicing since she bought it, which was like... 1997? :x I forget. But please factor in the idea that she takes care of her electronics, especially her cell phones and cameras (both digicams and non-digicams).
