Digital cameras
Jul. 25th, 2006 06:52 amThere are two sparklies these days that I want, and which I would make good use of - one is an ipod, the other a digital camera. Of the two, the camera seems more practical (though if I get one more sketchy asshole on the bus harassing me I may go for the ipod - the headphones on my current player no longer work so it's getting harder and harder to avoid them).
Advice? Any recs? It's going to be my birthday present to myself, so I have time to save up a bit of money, though I'd like not to go over three hundred. There was one I loved, waterproof and shockproof, but the pricetag was a little high. I might get one of the kodak ones, they seem the best of the lot so far...

Date: 2006-07-25 11:08 am (UTC)...really, though, once you have a camera, think about how often *are* you going to use it. On the other hand, of course, I guess a digicam is one of those things pretty much *everyone* is expected to have on them nowadays...

Date: 2006-07-25 11:53 am (UTC)To be honest, I got it more because I got the camera and a 256 mb memory card together for about $140.

Date: 2006-07-25 12:34 pm (UTC)iPod? Every day. Walking to work, taking the bus... It's a perfect excuse to NOT interact with random people. :) Drown out the world.
Digital camera? The only real pix I take are on vacations, and they have disposable cameras that can be transferred to CD when you send them in for developing...
I just don't take pix. But I love my iPod.

Date: 2006-07-25 01:02 pm (UTC)the 30 Gig ones are really only good if you have that much to put ON them, right?

Date: 2006-07-25 02:00 pm (UTC)I have another friend with an ipod who actually chronicled its odious journey of breakage and schmucky customer service, finally ending when Apple sent her back the wrong ipod. It was however, a brand new upgraded ipod, so she is keeping it until that one breaks. Also, iTunes is the devil. Anyway, there are plenty other brands of mp3 players on the market that are cheaper and just as good as an ipod. I think Creative Labs players are considered second best? Of course, I myself wouldn't mind a player with seven hundred gigs, etc, but in all practicality I will never listen to that much music at one time so I settled for a 2 gig, which has worked out just peachy.
Happy hunting! ;)

Date: 2006-07-25 04:54 pm (UTC)Don't by HP. They suck. :P And eat batteries like nothing else. Kodak has ended up my family's camera-brand-of-choice at this point, and I'm sure what I have is now old and outdated. ;) But I still love it lots. I think it cost me around $200 at the time...
Things to bear in mind:
Battery Life. (Most of them suck)
Optical Zoom. (Mine's a 3x, Mom's got a 10x. Digital zoom is worthless)
Memory Card Type. (SD seems to be the most common and versatile)
Ease of changing Modes. (From closeup to landscape to action..)
Ease of changing Flash modes. (Redeye is nice...)
Speaking of Flash... most cameras blur pictures pretty badly when indoors and having the flash turned off. If it's possible for you to test the camera for this problem before you buy it, do so. (Unless you have a much, much steadier hand than me...) ^^v
Also, decide if you want it to have video capability. :) Then see what kind of quality it'll give you. My 4.0 megapixel camera gives me some pretty nice videos... 9.9
<.< .... end of babbling. ^^;
