So essentially we have someone who's written a character who's a PERFECTLY GOOD RACE already, but then he has to be more special. Gawd, can't they be arsed to even come up with their own cool race as opposed to bastardizing two existing ones? THINKING, PEOPLE. It's not that hard.

...I suppose it would be too much to hope there was any foreshadowing to this at all before.

Well, I think they're some sort of dark fae race, technically. And he is an exiled necromancer, except none of this fucking matters until the last fifty or so pages of the story, when all of a sudden you learn out of the blue that dark fae means half elf, half vampire, and lo! this entire time he has been half vamp and sekkretly all along vanted to drink blud of his boytoy. I'll go dig up link so you guys can see the story. It wasn't the worst I'd read, until the randomosity at the end that the story really did not need. It was like okaystory okaystory OMFGNEEDBIGPLOTCRAMITINQUICK.
