Why is it such an awful thing to be a stripper? I don't get it. This chick on the radio is Deeply Concerned that her 18-year old daughter is a stripper. And now they're talking about how she plans to be a journalist someday.

"She needs to learn it's not all about the money."

...
...
...it seems to me, listening, that all that money will be useful to help her toward the journalist thing. A profession like that doesn't come cheap. AND NOW THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH MONEY JOURNALISTS GET. Who the hell needs to wake up here?

Jeez. My parents used to make comments about me being a stripper (I would suck at it, except in the matter of my rack). People need to chill. Moral issue? What moral issue? People bitch about all the wrong shit.

Here here! Just because you're a stripper, exotic dancer, or whatever they call it now, it doesn't man that it is bad. Dancers have to work their butts off to keep in shape, to stay limber enough to do what they do. It's hard work, just like any other profession out there. You're selling your skills, just like a journalist, secretary, doctor, or any other profession.

It's probably the removal of clothes that bothers most people, as if stripping is the equivalent to fucking (oh man, that sounds crude).

It never fails to amuse me how paranoid people are about nudity. I keep forgetting it was puritans and all that decided to move to the new world.

Um, well, I think it's more a product of our parents generation than ours. My parents generation (Baby Boomers) were told that sex is very private, and hence for them (at least the feeling I get from mom and dad), unless there's Cinemax involved, there is no porn allowed, you do it *in* the bedroom and little else. They were also told that feelings aren't to be shared (especially the male of the species) and that if you can't admit it freely to your friends in church, it's probably *not* a good plan. Also, my grandma wrote my aunt out of the majority of her will when she found out my aunt gave her boyfriend a BJ. So, it's the older generation's influence too.

Her (the stripper's) family's probably embarrassed, doesn't know what to say or how it looks to other people, hence the mom's lashing out with what seems to her a perfectly rational argument. Trouble is, she's not seeing the truth of the situation, hence the radio show.

Except that there were several gens involved in this discussion. And it's not the first time I've heard people my own age or relativly close spazzing out. The DJs are relatively young - only in their early-mid thirties. and they're rather liberal about other thigns. But you bring up strippers and people in this city go nuts. And apparently this girl's had family *and* friends gang up on her to make her see the error of her ways. It just boggles me.

Um, hate to inform you of this, luv, but you are in the Midwest.

My family's very much in the Midwest mindset when it comes to certain things, though we are more adventurous in culinary interest than things used to be in Indiana etc. (My parents lived some places where Pizza was considered exotic food.)

As such, you're very much dealing with more of the overriding conservative and religious influence than you'd find in say... Las Vegas. That having been said, I stand with the Green Party on some issues, the Democrats on others, the Republicans on a third set, and Libertarian on a fourth. Someone can be very liberal, but just have a different idea on a specific issue. That proves that they're actually capable of thinking for themselves, which is impressive in this day and age. (People around here often vote Republican simply because their parents do... not because they actually have an opinion of their own.)

Honestly, though, money's money to me, and I see nothing wrong with a woman stripping to pay her way through school.

Heh. You speaka da good sense. I do live in the worst possible area for this X_x I think the majority of the city is Sunday-Catholic, which makes things real interesting. And honestly it wasn't so much the topic as the...I dunno, their tones. They were cold, condescending and her mother sounded ashamed. It upset me that such a trivial thing could cause so much upset. So much was passed over and ignored to rant about her stripping.

You may live in the land of the Sunday Catholics, but I live in the land of the Southern Baptists. I know about conservative influences, believe you me.

I think also, the woman's trying to deflect a lot of her shame at the situation onto her daughter, which is the entire reason she called in, I bet. Trying to get more people on her side, not that it makes her argument any more logical.

Besides, if there wasn't an issue to get people's dander up, morning talk radio would blow most heartily.

I don't think strippers are bad but honestly I wouldn't want either of my daughters to be strippers. If they were doing it to put themselves through school I still wouldn't like it but could accept it on the other hand if they wanted that to be their career I wouldn't be happy with the decision. It is kind of a dead end profession since eventually you are not in your teens and early twenties anymore.

It's funny you should mention this, because [livejournal.com profile] inklacedfeather and I were talking about this in the beginning of summer. How we totally would be strippers if we had the bodies because the money is good.

Parents can be so hypocritical. I bet you anything that girl's parents were on about her getting a job forever, and once she found one, they complain over the type of job. And if not, then dammit, be glad your kid has initiative and the self-confidence to flaunt her body at strangers for cash. Geez!

Apparently she had a job where her mother worked, and quite to take up the stripping. There was no small amount of bitterness in her voice when the mom said her daughter made more than both her parents. I mean it's pretty obvious she's doing it for money, and that seemed to make it worse. But any fool could see that's probaby money for school and shit. If they want her to be a World Famous Journalist, them's big bucks.

And seriously. I wish I had a third of her confidence.

From the girls in the strip club I went to, you're about norm for size. Not all of them were toothpicks, actually, most of them weren't. As for coordination & flexibility, those were a needed trait for the job.

Oh well, you could always strip for me & Tony and take our money, we'd probably pay to see it.

I have several friends who go to the clubs every week or every other week.

It seems that the stage dancing part of the job is not really the meat of the work. The majority of being a stripper is lap dances.

So, women should really be asking themselves if they want to make a living gyrating on the laps of random men until they climax.

Though, I decided to read some articles on the subject and not just take the words of people I know.

Personally, I find nothing wrong with profession. Nor even prostitution if it were done in a safe and legal manner.

You may have noticed that I used "reading" and "strippers" in the same Reply. And that is probably why I am a dateless geek. *sigh* That and I would far prefer to watch a movie with strippers than go to an actual strip club. I'm sure it's cheaper. Not that I probably couldn't afford to given that I have a box from Amazon arriving nearly every day this week.

Uh, I suppose I was brought up in a way that could probably be explained away as culture differences? I don't know. Then again, my parents are some of the ODDEST mixes of traditional/non-traditional chinese I know. I mean, for one thing, wearing black at Chinese New Year = Noooooooooooooooo but my sister and I have been doing it since... um... 1999 or so? Then there's the fact that my mom and sister keep trying to shove me into revealing stuff, and my parents are generally really REALLY 'modern' and yet get twitchy when home cooked meals are served without soup (the broth type, not the cream based type). And also how they seem to love porridge (the type that looks like rice in water? Uh, there're different ways of making porridge, and I suspect what first comes to your mind might not be the same thing as what first comes to mine. x_X;;;) and stuff like that.

...*cough* That is to say, I have to say that my parents would SCREAM if I ever dared do that, and my first reaction to "would you be stripper" is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. >_>;;;;;;;;; Can I claim cultural differences? I think Asians are suppose to be lots more conservative.

In your case it is a cultural thing. Though in some cases, Asians aren't more conservative so much as...at least in Japan different aspects of your life get put into different boxes and those boxes don't mingle. But the poitn remains it's a cultural thing in your case. Here, there's no good reason for people to pitch hissy fits because their daughter is sexy enough to make hundreds (even thousands) in a week.

Let's not forget that looking at porn is a social deviance and a sure sign that your son (usually) is on the road to doing "other bad things" so you might want to start searching his room for drugs and shit. 'cause nudie mags so entirely = pot.

I mean... I know now, having seen our brother's (well, really his roommate's) stash of Playboys that he's definietly mixed up in other things. Like... WoW and Magic. He's surely a delinquent. ^_^

I can forgive people like GM having their reservations, but beyond that?--grow up. It's this desire to hide from sex and sexuality and make it seem dirty, that prevents the proper education of such. You can't teach responsible behavior if you're too busy being offended to talk about to begin with.

Somehow I think I got slightly off topic... heh

Let's see...porn, video games, slash...I'M A SOCIAL DEVIANT WOOHOO!

On a slightly more mature note. The more you hide something and say "No! Bad" the worse you're going to make things in the long run. Ignorance is only bliss until it catches up with you.

Personally, I don't see the point in strip clubs and the like. To paraphrase from one of them fameous comedians, it's like going to an all you can eat buffet, but... HEY, NO TOUCHIE!.

Granted, if I had the body (or the ability to dance AT ALL), I might think differently. Because yeah, there's good money to be made if you are good at it.

And, referring to sexual deviancy... oh, it doesn't get any more deviant than me.

A couple of friends once thought they were clever and "tricked" me into going into a strip club. Apparently they take my penchant for silence to mean I'm a prude who spazzes easy. I think when I just sat there looking bored they were a bit flummoxed. I left wondering why anyone would shell out the money they do for such things. Better to pay for porn or a little bit of action, imho.

Yay deviance!
