Digital cameras

There are two sparklies these days that I want, and which I would make good use of - one is an ipod, the other a digital camera. Of the two, the camera seems more practical (though if I get one more sketchy asshole on the bus harassing me I may go for the ipod - the headphones on my current player no longer work so it's getting harder and harder to avoid them).

Advice? Any recs? It's going to be my birthday present to myself, so I have time to save up a bit of money, though I'd like not to go over three hundred. There was one I loved, waterproof and shockproof, but the pricetag was a little high. I might get one of the kodak ones, they seem the best of the lot so far...

Everyone I know who's ever had one seems to be all about one of the Canon digital ELPHs. My brother has a 5.0 MP Sony, and that's served him well too.

...really, though, once you have a camera, think about how often *are* you going to use it. On the other hand, of course, I guess a digicam is one of those things pretty much *everyone* is expected to have on them nowadays...

Genius has some cheap ones, maybe about....70 USD? about 5 megapixels. But i'm not sure about quality. Sony cybershots. the new moels are about 1 centimetre thick 2.5 inch screen, and 6 megapixels. Nice. About, 300 bucks for the slightly older versions(which are pretty much the same with a little less megapixels) but definitely more for the newest. Try to find BenQ or Panasonic ae well. Cheaper, but it's actually pretty much the same quality as sony. Kodak eludes my knowledge of tech. Sorry.

I've got a Fujifilm FinePix A345 (yeah, it's right next to me), and it's done pretty good for me. Captures film, got different settings for different situations, 4.1 megapizels, 3x optical zoom. The images themselves turn out pretty well, all things considered, but it's not like the best in the world.

To be honest, I got it more because I got the camera and a 256 mb memory card together for about $140.

So, I have both. Let us analyze the frequency with which I use each.

iPod? Every day. Walking to work, taking the bus... It's a perfect excuse to NOT interact with random people. :) Drown out the world.

Digital camera? The only real pix I take are on vacations, and they have disposable cameras that can be transferred to CD when you send them in for developing...

I just don't take pix. But I love my iPod.

Yep... Sadly, though, I have a mini, and even though I have a 100GB harddrive on my laptop, I am limited by how much music I can put on said iPod.

the 30 Gig ones are really only good if you have that much to put ON them, right?

*grins* i'm working on that.

:) Scary thing is, my first laptop had the same size harddrive as my current iPod.

I would like a bigger one, but we'll see...

I have to come down firmly in the camp of "don't buy an ipod." I bought the nano and have had nothing but trouble. And I was one of the folks who had to send their nano back in to be replaced because the screen cracks at the drop of a hat.

I have another friend with an ipod who actually chronicled its odious journey of breakage and schmucky customer service, finally ending when Apple sent her back the wrong ipod. It was however, a brand new upgraded ipod, so she is keeping it until that one breaks. Also, iTunes is the devil. Anyway, there are plenty other brands of mp3 players on the market that are cheaper and just as good as an ipod. I think Creative Labs players are considered second best? Of course, I myself wouldn't mind a player with seven hundred gigs, etc, but in all practicality I will never listen to that much music at one time so I settled for a 2 gig, which has worked out just peachy.

Happy hunting! ;)

Dun own an ipod (I burn CDs for fun ^^) but I have gone through three digital cameras now, so I can speak with some authority on that matter. ;)

Don't by HP. They suck. :P And eat batteries like nothing else. Kodak has ended up my family's camera-brand-of-choice at this point, and I'm sure what I have is now old and outdated. ;) But I still love it lots. I think it cost me around $200 at the time...

Things to bear in mind:
Battery Life. (Most of them suck)
Optical Zoom. (Mine's a 3x, Mom's got a 10x. Digital zoom is worthless)
Memory Card Type. (SD seems to be the most common and versatile)
Ease of changing Modes. (From closeup to landscape to action..)
Ease of changing Flash modes. (Redeye is nice...)

Speaking of Flash... most cameras blur pictures pretty badly when indoors and having the flash turned off. If it's possible for you to test the camera for this problem before you buy it, do so. (Unless you have a much, much steadier hand than me...) ^^v

Also, decide if you want it to have video capability. :) Then see what kind of quality it'll give you. My 4.0 megapixel camera gives me some pretty nice videos... 9.9

<.< .... end of babbling. ^^;

My sister was just telling me about her Olympus digicam. She says it's been functioning pretty well and hasn't required servicing since she bought it, which was like... 1997? :x I forget. But please factor in the idea that she takes care of her electronics, especially her cell phones and cameras (both digicams and non-digicams).

If you get a camera get a Nikon or a Cannon. They are they best for the money. And they're fairly simple. Nikon uses SD memory which is good and fairly inexpensive as far as memory goes. I have a Nikon, which I love. Small, powerful, and seems to be very durable.
